I would like to get my daughter a 6.5, I think, synthetic, to use to deer hunt and I also get to use it. I would probably use it to hog hunt at night so as not to bang up my other guns. She handles my wife's 243 just fine. The reason I am looking at 6.5 is just to have a different cailber than we already have in the family. 243, 25-06, 30-30, 270, 308. Some are lever, bolt and BAR. So i was looking for a bit of diversity. Don't care for 223. FIL suggested a 260, but then others said 6.5.

Not looking for any long barrel extremely long distance type gun with a heavy barrel. It will be carried around quite a bit, not bench shooting.

Can anyone recommend one that comes threaded that I could eventually suppress for hog hunting, or have a better idea. I do not care for the tactical type guns, so that leaves this one to be bolt action. I would test them but they won't let you bring em back, I do not want to spend both arms, but I have always been very partial to Browning. If I could keep it all under 1K, w scope, not suppressor, I'd be happy. Suppressor may never happen, but none of my other guns are capable without special work.

The 260 is a 6.5, they all shoot .264 diameter bullets. The 260 is just a 308 necked down to hold a .264 diameter bullet. Jus like the 243 is a 308 case with a .244 diameter bullet.

For not that bad price check out the Howa mini action in 6.5 Grendel, the 20 inch heavy barrel version is still a light weight but does not come with the barrel threaded, it is plenty thick enough to thread though. Small cartridge with noticeable less recoil than a 243 but deadly past 300 on hogs and deer.

There are others and the darling these days is the 6.5 Creedmoor, there are several rifles that include threaded barrels chambered in it.

One thing with having the cases the same be careful and make sure you have the right ammo with you, at a glance it is easy to make a mistake if you have rifles that use the same case with different diameter bullets like 243 and 260.

I have 4 different 6.5s and grab the 6.5 Grendel bolt action much more than the others for hunting. Light weight, easy to carry and shoot.

I'd get a Creedmoor just because it seems the market has really jumped on this cartridge and it's acceptance is going to really drive the ability to buy ammo off the shelf. The Hornady match ammo shot almost as good in mine as my handloads that were tuned.

Edit - took me to long to type...kmon makes some great points. That mini Howa I had forgotten about and would make a great carry around gun.

factory ammo is more available for the Creedmoor than the 260 or the Grendel but there are some good offerings in all. The Grendel is getting more attention from the manufactures these days and has Wolf steel case for about 6 bucks a box if you want some cheap plinking ammo. Federal currently offers 3 loads with I have heard another in the works. Hornady at least 2 I think 3 and Alexander Arms 7 or 8 loads for the Grendel.

Personally I have a .223, 6.8 SPC, .243, .308, 7mm-08, and now a 6.5 Creedmoor. I am starting to get caliber-poor. You have several great cartridges already in the fold-IMO if you need another gun just get one in a caliber you already have.

There is something to be said for that approach. Then again more calibers are fun.

I have something that shoots about every bullet diameter 17 through 51 except for just a few: 8mm, 40 and 41. Lots of reloading Dies, bullets, brass and cases. I would have been $$$ ahead if I had just stuck with the 22lr, 7mm-08, 20 and 12 gauge I had 32 years ago. Could have used them for all my hunting. But they say variety is the spice of life

Best value 6.5 creedmoor hunting rigs:

Savage 10 FCP-SR - around $450 new when they're running rebates, good trigger, very accurate, good aftermarket availability, slightly heavier profile barrel for range work, good factory stock
Ruger American Predator - around $400 new, slightly lighter and higher recoil than 10FCP-SR, allegedly good trigger (I've never shot one but have handled them), good aftermarket support, good accuracy, stock is ok at best

Other choices without threaded barrels:
Tikka T3x Lite - good trigger, extremely accurate, lightweight, stock leaves something to be desired
Savage Axis XP - good trigger, accurate, low price, a little less aftermarket support than others

I'm not a Browning fan so I can't tell you what options they have. I think Tikka, Savage, and Ruger tend to have the best performance:price ratios IMHO.

I've got a Savage 11 and Ruger American in 6.5CM and both are great shooting rifles. The Ruger is threaded, so that meets one of your criteria. The new TC Compass also comes threaded in the Creedmoor and seems to be good rifle for the money.

A 6.5 Grendel is a great cartridge and the Hornady Black ELD-M has been great factory ammo.

If you are going Creedmoor, you might look at the Ruger American Predator. CHF barrels, threaded, and scope rail.

Whittaker guns has the Howa Mini youth on sale for 350 if someone is so inclined. That is the price or cheaper than Brownells has the barreled action most of the time.

I have Ruger American "PREDATOR" in 22-250. 308, my son has 6.5 cred all threaded, all shoot very well. When my son bought the 6.5 it came with vortek scope.
