Just looking for a good night image out to 200 yards or a little more, for general spotting purposes for varmints (monocular or binoculars, not a riflescope), and super-precise images are not required. Just need to identify the critters roaming at night. What models work good for under $400?

And for this should I get 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x or what?

Try the new Pulsar digiforce digital monocular. It's around 300ish. They work really good for the money.

Bushnell Equinox. Excellent product at a great price.

I would also have to recommend the equinox. I loved mine before switching to thermal.

If there is some moonlight I can see easily 300-400 yards and identity an animal.

Equinox 3x. 4x, or 6X? Lots of review complaints that the field of view is too narrow, especially on the 6X.

Rethinking my use, I want to be able to identify critters mainly in the 100 to 300 yard range, just to know what's there, not to count their teeth.

And quite a few comments that the viewfinder screen is so bright as to be blinding?

Check out the ATN BinoX. I have them and love them. You can easily see out to 300 yards at night. Base mag is 4x digital up to 16x. You can also record everything you see as well as tether to a smart phone if you are hunting with friends. They work very well in the day as well.

I like my ATN Binox---just used them Saturday night to identify a big'un coming in from outside 200 yards. Be sure to get the external battery or you will go broke buying CR123s.

I read the same about the 6x and went with the 4. I think the field of view works great for me on the 4x
