They're really doing great work with bullet design, and ammo production. They are the first place I look, when it comes to a new bullet.
Today I was tasked with helping provide some information and somewhere to start, getting a .50 BMG a mile, maybe farther. The ammo is Hornady 750 gr A-Max. I could not find a G-7 B.C. anywhere. So I called Hornady. The guy that answered the phone listened to my request and said, "I don't want to answer that based on memory, let me call the ballistics guys that know for sure". And asked if I minded waiting on hold. In about 3 minutes he came back with the answer.
I complemented the great work Hornady has been doing in the last 18 months, and he explained their mode of thinking and why they do what they do. He and I discussed BCs, long range, their R & D, their new ballistic calculator and asked me to give it a try. He gave me his extension, and his e-mail address, and requested I let him know what I find with the BC, and their calculator running beside a couple of others I tend to use.
I'm a big fan of Hornady, and they keep reinforcing that.

I’ve been very pleased with them, as well. They’re also the first place I look.

I just loved them for their ammo before. Didn't realize they had great customer service too!

If you are a long range shooter or hunter, you really can't beat what Hornady has been throwing out lately. The product and price point are outstanding.

If you download the 4 DOF all your questions will be answered.:)
If you ever get near Grand Island stop in and take the tour, worth every minute. A great company run by great people. I will be there next week.

I just wish while they make all this kool new stuff and give good answers they would support some of their offerings of the past. Introduce a cartridge, some of us like the idea and buy one then they stop making the ammo or make such a limited run it might touch a shelf before it is gone.

OK. I'm a dinosaur, but I'm unhappy with Hornady for discontinuing some of their really good bullets, to wit, the 100gr and 120gr 25 cals. Yeah, I know, the BCs really suck. But for those of us who don't shoot into the next zip code, they worked great.

JG have fun with that bullet, as a spotter you should be able to see the splash or 1.7+ ounces of lead, copper and aluminum hitting.
What do they say the G7 is you know why I ask?
The G1 BC of 1.015 looks a little crazy and ballistic calculators choke and puke on anything 1 and over for a BC, even Hornady's unless they have changed it in the last couple years, haven't checked.

I don't load up much of their rifle bullets but I do mainly use their pistol bullets, brass and dies. Have had de-capping pins break and mandrels bend. They have always sent me new ones free and been very nice to deal with. Keep us updated on the 50 cal load development.

I don’t reload but I do shoot Hornady ammo in quite a few of my guns. I love the 120 SSTs in my 6.8 and am very pleased with the performance of their 300 gr SST slugs in my 12 gauge with rifled barrel. Wish they would release a 90 grain hunting bullet in 6.8, I’d like a lighter faster bullet for my SBR.

I have been using Hornady Black in my 6.5 Grendel, the SD has been under 13 so far, and shooting 1/2moa 5-shot groups. I am very pleased, since this stuff can be purchased for less than $17/box.
In my 6.5 Creedmoor, I am seeing almost identical performance with the 120 ELD-M ammo.... SD under 13, 1/2moa 5-shot groups.
With the high BC's, relatively uniform MV's, and good accuracy the Hornady stuff is very hard to beat for the price. I know it could definitely get better if I got into the handloading game. But it would take a long time and a whole lot of shooting to pay for the equipment when this Hornady box ammo is so affordable. I'd venture to say that with their ammo, a fella is probably better off investing in more trigger time and practice. IF you shoot one of their "pet calibers" that is....

He told me a G-7 of .494 I asked, why isn't this published? He said, that's a very good question. There's probably a disconnect with the ballistics guys, and the I.T. guys that maintin web based things. Maybe he fired off an e-mail and will get that corrected.

I have a love/hate relationship with them. Love their price but sometimes qc is a bit meh. Also after the eld switch I had some big bc variations between actual and advertised. That being said after dialing it in they worked fine. Enough I still run them. I like how they seem to stay involved in the community and send reps out as a lot of others don't do that on the personable level.

I know what you mean dee. It looks like they were throwing darts trying to establish BCs on the ELDs. I remember trying to get a BC nailed down, but once I did, it was fine. Which leads me to, at least their bullet construction is consistent, so once you get a BC nailed down, you can run it.

Glad someone is happy with them, Only ones I have really got to shoot great were the 220 rn out of my 300. Had a load worked up for my 270 with 150 grain interlocks that shot ok, but you never knew if it was going to take the shoulder off the other side or if it would even go through. The second time I shot a hilcountry wt deer in the neck that didn't get a pass through at 40 yards with a 150 grain soft point I quit using them. Have shot a handful through my 243 and they seem to do ok. I just finished bedding it so hopfully they as well as the sierras will do better.

I tried the Black in my Grendel this weekend. My rifle was built to shoot Hornady’s Match ammo with the A-Max. Since they’ve either quit making it, or I just can’t find it, I figured the Black would be about the same. Point of impact was off a little, so I adjusted my zero. Everything else has been just as stellar, including on game performance.

I really like V-Max in .22 centerfires. Those are a go-to bullet for .22 centerfires. Frequently, paired with Varget, they produce an excellent combination.
