But don't recover the deer, do you count that animal as harvested and burn a tag? The reason I ask this is because on almost all package hunts, especially for trophy deer, that is the rule. How many practice this on your lease or ranch? We do on ours but I get the feeling not many others do.

Here goes my 2 cents worth....

I don't *think so* It IS illegal( In Texas) to not make a reasonable effort to look for a wounded animal, but not sure about the tagging though.

My question wasn't intended to be about what's legal or not.

We do simply because we’ve been rebuilding.. this will still apply to doe harvest but we have a target list of bucks that need to go.. so it’s first come first serve.

I'm in a 1 buck county and only target one buck a season. A few years back I shot my target buck low and forward, possibly through the brisket. Never recovered him and thought he "could've" survived but never proved it, so I was done for the year. If I think he is mortally wounded or there's even a chance he didn't survive why would I shoot another one? I've killed my buck just didn't get him to the house, is how I look at it.

Legally all you have to do is try to recover the animal and if you don't find it you can shoot another one. Fouz was asking what everybody else does, not what's legal.

Wish I could tell you what I'd do, but not recovering an animal I shoot doesn't happen

On our lease, if you shoot and wound a buck, that is your buck. 2 seasons ago one hunter shot a nice buck, and we found it bedded down a distance away with a thermal scope at night, but were not able to finish it off before it left limping and running away. We agreed, as did the hunter, that was his buck for the season.

The answer to your question depends a lot on lease rules and personal rules. When paying for a hunt through a ranch or outfitter, they have to go by the "draw blood" rules. It's a totally different game when you as a hunter pay to shoot someone else's animal.

No tag used unless the carcass is recovered. If the animal is recovered and not edible it will still be tagged. Most guys won't hunt another trophy after a botched shot that results in a lost deer but will hunt the same deer if not mortally wounded. That's just the way our group is.

Kill enough and eventually a scope bumped off or deer moving as you pull the trigger or 100 other things will happen. Shot deer for 20 years and at least 10 of those I used all 5 deer tags, never lost one not one, until 2 years ago.

Take that back. I had a clean miss last year with a gun that was shooting a foot and a half high.

Why would a hunter who paid to take a buck feel he should get to shoot another one after making a poor shot?

I'm not burning a tag if I don't find the animal dead.

But I have an over-population problem.

I totally agree with the logic of it on a paid hunt or a lease.

On our property we switch who shoots bucks every year because we don't have enough land to support everyone taking one. If I wounded one and we didn't recover him I would just not shoot another. I wouldn't throw my tag away though in fear of having a game warden write me a citation for not filling out my log lol.

Have a buddy that sells some cull hunts on their place to offset feed costs and they just don't have enough people to consume the number of deer they shoot a year. Last year they had a kid come out and shoot at a really nice management buck and wing him. They trailed and couldn't find him. The next day the deer was spotted and was evident that he was fine and not mortally wounded so they let him take another buck. Some did not agree with it, but in the end that was how it went down.

I have done doe and spike hunts on a few places when I was younger and some of the hunters with us had trouble a few wounded deer that were not recovered. The owner really didn't care, he wanted does killed and just wanted everyone who came out to get their deer.

Yes we have a rule if you draw blood that's your deer. Didn't always have that rule but after a rash of wounded deer we had to. The rule forces you to scrap ideas of taking low percentage shots and concentrate on high percentage shots.

I've had this happen twice. The first time was a huge 8pt. He ducked the arrow and it gashed the top of his back. I knew he was cut bad but not vital. I just kept hunting and watching cams hoping he would show. He never did but I think he left the property. I was prepared to shoot another buck but it was going to have to be a no brainer. I ended up shooting a great cull on the last day on buck season.

The second time...last season...the arrow hit low and a little back. I trailed the deer 2miles. I'm pretty sure he died but not anywhere close by. He was well off the property. I was not happy about it but went back to hunting. Two weeks later I killed a great deer that was older then dirt and still a good trophy.
I don't have anyone to answer to on my property's so I just prayed about the it and decided myself every time. We are a five deer county and there are always culls to take so I kept hunting every time. I think it's worth saying I got extra picky after that. It's also worth saying that I only shoot bucks that are 6 or 7 years old. I pass so many deer every year. When you finally lay eyes on the mature deer you feel so lucky to be seeing them. You take the shot if you get it.

Yes, if you draw blood that's your buck on our lease. One of the rules in our lease agreement.

I did last year even though it wasn't required. On mine an arrow outsert broke and I got pictures of the deer after the season was over. I think if you are going to commit to archery only you should hold your self to a high standard of ethics.

I didn't see Chris' comment as trying to divide hunters. TPWD did a study several years ago indicating 35% of all bow shot deer are not recovered. As such, guys like Chris know this and don't just keep shooting bucks until they recover one. Doesn't mean he's more ethical or a better hunter than anyone else. Just a personal standard he imposes upon himself. cheers

No rule for it on our place and most don’t. If the hunter made every effort to make a Clean and ethical shot and every effort to recover the deer, then they can still hunt a buck. We leave it up to the hunter on how they decide to handle it from there. If it became an issue, we would address it with that hunter rather than punish the rest.

Buck or doe, doesn't matter. If the deer is lost, a tag gets burned and the deer still gets entered in the harvest log on our place.

But this part of the TPWD "Waste of Game" is confusing.

It is an offense (Class C misdemeanor) if a person while hunting kills or wounds a game bird or game animal and intentionally or knowingly fails to make a reasonable effort to retrieve the animal or bird and include it in the person's daily or seasonal bag limit.

Does this mean so long as you make a reasonable effort to retrieve said game animal, you don't have to enter it in the harvest log?

Again, we burn the tags if the animal is not recovered on our place, but I can see how the ambiguity in the statement above could get someone in trouble, or not. Maybe one of our resident wardens will chime in with the answer. BTW, it is a Class A Misdemeanor if the game animal is a whitetail, muley or desert bighorn.
