Never tried a neck shot but I'm curious about it. Why or why not? Where on the neck? Using factory 100gr hornady sst in a 243 if it makes a difference.

I shoot all my does in the neck. I hunt with a 22-250 55gr hornady varmint express. I always aim for the white throat patch. Drops em like a sack of taters every time.

Why - In my experience neck shot = DRT. Why not - There is little margin for error and you should be highly confident in your shooting skills.

I shot an Axis doe in the neck with a .243 and the bullet went right through missing the vertebrae. She ran off about 100 yards and laid down. I thought I missed, but my guide said he thought she ran off funny. We found her laying down and shot her again.

I’ve been neck shooting for close to 30 years and have dropped every single one. I’ll neck shoot with the exception of the trophy buck. Just need to be comfortable with your shooting skills.

I am very confident in my abilities out to about 150. Longest shot will be slightly less than 100. And the throat patch, is that only if they are looking right at you?

Not too bad. I'd shoot high up on the neck and in the center. Makes for a different memory. I can remember being at the taxidermist and a guy brought a buck in with an exit hole in the center of the front of the neck. This was about 1998. It made a memory for me. He said it was running directly away from him and he took the neck shot on the big eight. Said he went down fast. I learned a lesson. Sometimes you dont get more than one window on a big one. Those movie posed perfect broadside shots are for the movies. Hunting from all angles, I've made some hand sewn shots and with success.

Recently got a gym membership, strange folks! I like to show up the roid zombies with my full motion curls with the 55lb. bells. Not their cheater short stroked light weights. It's holarious.

I always thought a neck shot was the best and fastest way to kill an animal until I became a member of THF. There will be many on here that will tell you it's just wrong and unethical. I've killed over 150 deer with a neck or head shot and none of them lived to complain about it.

The best way to do it is to whistle at them, when they turn to look at you shoot them in the center of the neck or between the eyes.

It's also very effective if they are running away from you. They'll turn a flip. But knockdown power isn't real either.

Like Scalebuster said, whistle at them and when they look at you bust em. Agree with being confident in yiur shooting skills.

Your deer, your choice on shot placement. Just don't constantly advertise that you only shoot neck shots and anyone who doesn't is less of a hunter. That crap doesn't make you any friends. That guy needs validation he isn't getting elsewhere, if you catch my drift.

I know my limits as far as shooting, I won't exceed them to try something new. Most shots will in actuality be ~60yds or just a hair more. So the area I'm looking for is basically "brain stem" area, for lack of a better term. About the top five inches of the neck before the base of the skull, bottom jaw line area?

so I am curious = you have hunted 30 years and only neck shoot and you have never missed or wounded a deer?

Im aware of that. But I thought I would try it. But, I don't want it to be an uneducated attempt in case I mess something up because of lack of knowledge about it and cause the animal undue pain. I'm not about that.

To clarify, not aiming at the bottom jaw line, about 4-5 inches below it is the question I'm asking. Sorry for any confusion.

If you shoot them anywhere in the center of the neck they will die right where they are standing. Don't let anyone tell you differently. At less than 60 yards that's where anyone needs to be aiming.

and if you are off a few inches and blow their jaw off how does that work out?

Personally I go for high front shoulder. Yes there is some meat damage but seems pretty darn successful at anchoring one right where it stands. I have done a few neck shots and had extremely mixed results. Hit the spine and it's lights out but hit anything else and it's anybody's guess. Head shots are a sure thing when deer are willing to stand still. Heard and seen deer with a lower jaw blown off... No bueno!

Why would you blow their jaw off? That won't kill them.

I have seen all shots go bad. It seems that high shoulder shooters speak of it as law, and behind-the-shoulder shooters seem to think they have it figured out. But I have seen high shoulder shots hit gut, even neck, or miss; the same with behind the shoulder shots. Most of us have seen this.
It seems that everyone thinks their way is best.
I witness about 100 animals a year being hunted, and neck shooters seem to be quite successful.

Thanks for the input fellas. I'll let you know after next weekend if I did it or not and if so, how well it worked and my thoughts on it.

I've taken just one neck shot with a rifle in my 40+ years of deer hunting and the deer was less than 20 yards away. He had stopped behind a tree so that I couldn't see the vitals. At such a short distance, I knew my .270 would instantly break the neck.

Neck shots were the preferred method when I first started hunting deer with a shotgun as a kid and using dogs to chase deer was legal.
