Just picked up this 12bore J. Purdey bar-in-wood gun from 1881. Not pictured is the set of 30" nitro proofed steel barrels. With the right low pressure loads this old girl is still relevant today and I look forward to taking some ducks with it this season before I do a restoration on it. A beautiful gun built during a time when hand tools were the machine of choice, not the machine of necessity. I much enjoyed last seasons hunt with my 1890's WW Greener 12 bore. With RST low pressure #5 bismuth loads no fowl inside 35yds is lost.

Speechless! Almost. English or Turkish? Love the crotch feathers. Checkering is exemplary for the period, as is the metal smithing. All that aside, a functioning weapon from that period, in that condition, is a really neat find. Thanks so much for sharing the photos. Is it for sale ?

Great, now I've got a hankering for a sub-gauge hammergun.

OMG…. a Purdey! Now that’s a royal shotgun… I just love that wood and that old style fit and finish. Those British still make some of the nicest guns in the world (from shotguns, to sniper rifles and air guns).
