So... if you were going to head shoot hogs with your 17, what would be your ammo of choice. Would you go with 17grn or 20grn. And what bullet type. Full MJ , polimar tip etc. Please comment if you have experiance with the .17 in this use.
Not looking for disputes on rather or.not this is the right gun for the job.
Thanks

I've popped several in traps with a 17HMR. My choice is the CCI 20 grain Gamepoint. The polymer tipped loads seem to blow up a little to quickly.

that FMJ will zip right on in there. No worries about it not penetrating.

The .17gr amax groups the best out of my savage. I could see were a fmj would work though.

I have not used the A-17 on a hog yet, but it sure shoots great out of my savage. I have taken several hogs from 10-30 yards with the .17 using both 17gr and 20gr pills of all types and they all do a great job. I have shot hogs up to 200lbs behind the ear and they drop like a rock. I would really like to see what kind of penetration an FMJ gets. I am very picky about my shots, but it would be nice to be able to have a little more sting on a body shot if there is a mishap on the first one.

Iv killed pigs with both the heavier hollow and the 17.gr ballistic... both did about the same thing up to 100yrds under 50yrds they reek havoc... hit them right between the eyes on the flat part of the dome with their head down facing you.... if the head is up it will ricochet... the ear hole also aint bad spot dont aim behind the ear like you would with a larger round.. some largers boars with big necks will make the bullet explode before it hits the bone.. keep it on the skull.
really a 22mag is a much better choice but if 17hmr is what you got it gets the job done

The 20gr HP's,dig like no other, whether branded Hornady,CCI or Winny. They are affectionately known in these parts,as Elephant Loads. While the 17'Max will reliably out Agg any/all flavors of the 20's,in all of my over the counter and Custom 17 Hummers...the 20's certainly get the nod in terminal affects,as CNS Insertions go. Hint................

That rules out 90% of whats out there...Winchester is the only other maker than ATK/Hornady I believe.

I use hornady 20gr hollow points almost exclusively and they perform great on paper and flesh. I've killed several oinkers from 40 lbs up to 200. Head shots and even a neck shot on a big hog dropped without a step. Poly tips explode birds so I'm not sure how well they'd be on hogs. Also shot a fallow doe behind the shoulder with the hp and she dropped within 10 yards. I've shot from 30 yards up to 120 on hogs.
