I'm new to hog hunting and not sure how to judge size. Our new lease in Palo Duro Canyon has lots of them. This is the biggest I've seen on camera. How big would you experienced hog hunters guess he is? Thanks

It is a big pig. Shoot it and get the weight. Getting people to guess will give you a range of numbers that generally won't be actually helpful because... 1) most people can't judge weight very well 2) most people can't judge weight from pictures very well 3) pictures are often quite deceptive 4) the boar has a LOT of shag that makes it look bigger than it really is.

Thanks Double Naught Spy. I fit in to number 1 and 2 on your list. My grand kids asked me how big and I told them probably 300+ lbs. without really knowing. We're going to drag them to the bone pile and don't have scales.
We leased a 3400 acre pasture on a large ranch in Palo Duro Canyon and didn't realize how many pigs are in there. Use to lease a 18,000 pasture from them 30 years ago to run Aoudad hunts and there were zero pigs back then.

It's a big pig. Shoot it and throw him on a set of scales or get a heart girth measurement.

If we kill him, I'll get a heart girth measurement on him. Is there a formula to estimate weight from the measurement?

If not scale, use a tape measure to get heart girth.
Wrap the tape snugly behind the front legs, touching the front legs and find the smallest circumference you can find. It might take 2 or 3 tries to find it. Take that number in inches, multiply by 10, and subtract 200 and that gives you the weight in lbs.
So if you measure 53" then multiply by 10 (530) and subtract 200 will give you a weight of 330 lbs.
There is a longer, more precise formula that will tell you that it is actually 333 or 334, but for field expedient purposes, the short method is close enough.
Where people get into trouble on the method is by NOT finding the smallest circumference immediately behind the front legs, and/or not having the tape be snug.
This is not as accurate as a scale, but we find it to be really close, usually within 10 lbs or so on bigger hogs. It is much better than eyeball assessments or lifting assessments.
It is a big boar, but whether it is 240 or 340 is sort of hard to tell from the picture, either way, that would be a really nice one to shoot!

What the heck is the white crap coming out of his mouth? Shoot him so he runs aways - don't think I'd touch that filthy critter.

He is big dude. I'd drop the cute little tasty one standing under the feeder 1st, then put a round in the big one. Probably not too hard to hit him on the run.
Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

Shoot him in the neck then shoot him again and maybe again. He's big!

I agree he's big, but also agree that it's pretty tough to make accurate weight assessments from photos. Best bet is to shoot him and give him the tape test as DNS described. Then, let us know!

Foaming at the mouth is only diagnostic of excess salivation. Animals foam at the mouth for a lot of reasons. It can be caused by any number of things that are not deleterious to the hog's health such as heavy activity (running, sparring, attempting to mate with unreceptive sow). It can occur with poisoning and some diseases.

I shot a really big boar the other day right in the butthole. Gave him a Texas Heart shot after he spooked and turned to run away. Never looked for him.

First hog I killed was with a bow. Buddy's Dad said if I could shoot one in the hole he would gut it. I hit between the tail and hole. He refused.

If we get it killed, I'll come back with the taped measurements. Plan on using a 300 short mag on him myself but my grandsons and son-in-law shoot .243's. Hopefully we'll get him on the ground. Thanks for all the help!!

Couldn't have said it any better. And then when you do kill it and weigh it or tape it with pic, some idiot will still comment that it's BS.
