I haven't shot this gun in...5 years maybe 6-7

So it's been in the safe 99 percent of that time and I believed it still be sighted in

So this evening, I take it to my parents to sight it.

I didn't have a lot of time

3 shot group at 100 yards went...

1 shot-1" low and 1" to the right
2 shot-1" low and 1" to the left
3 shot-1" low and 1/2" to the right

I have a VX1 as glass

I am not an expert but I am guessing this is 2 moa?

Is that about realistically what it should be getting?

Not claiming to be 1" shooter at 500 yards guy just wondering

What you described is what I consider a normal hunting rifle type of group. 90% of deer hunters cant shoot MOA even if their rifles can. 90% of hunters will tell you they can though. Just go to a public shooting range and look at the targets posted down range. They will make the group you described look great!

What did it shoot before? Rugers 77s will shoot MOAish but they usually need a little bedding and trigger work. I have 4 of them.

I put a Timney trigger in it about 10 years ago. Set at 3.5 lbs

It's a .270 btw

I was shooting off a cattle trough.

I didn't fee like I pulled any but was wondering is that about what it should shoot for a normal shooter

Shooting Winchester Supremes, prob a 10 year old box

Rugers can typically do better but they aint going to win many accuracy contests. That's coming from a big Ruger fan too.

Get a better rest, try different ammo.

A $5000 rifle will shoot like crap, using ammo it doesn't like.

A $500 rifle can shoot terrific using ammo specifically tuned to it.

Thanks JG, I don't ever imagine a shot coming from more than 200 yards max.

Just shooting a deer once every few years deal.

Rugers will shoot. Just find the right ammo that your particular gun likes. Good trigger control and adequate rest.

Factory 270 Ruger M77 with Hornady 140 gr SST Superformance

Understood.

Yet, the way it's shooting right now.
Your zero is low.
At 200 yards, it'll shoot somewhere inside 10".

Get some fresh ammo and shoot from a real rest! Over a water trough you are shooting very well I say.

My Ruger will shoot like >2 MOA lighter ammo. I get a little heavier and I get 1-1.5 ish.

Perfectly acceptable for me. It will kill deer or elk out to 300 easy if I could shoot that well. They make some bad ones, but most are pretty decent.

I am a Ruger fan and while I have owned rifles costing 4-5X what my Rugers do, they always do what I need them too......

This is my M77 MKII stainless .270win with 140gr Hornady BTSP at the range a couple weeks ago when I sighted in.

Leupold VariXIII 3.5-10x40 - I will say the trigger was replaced with a Timney and the stock with a Hogue; but before I replaced those parts this rifle was still accurate.

What I'm trying to say is that your group is about normal for a stock Ruger 77 but they can be much better; and I would feel more than comfortable hunting with your rifle.....after all if you don't like it just sell it to me.

It’s interesting that a couple of you guys got great accuracy from the 140’s in the 270. When my Dad passed on a few years back, I got his rifle to give it a good cleaning, rescoped it, and decided to pass it along to his favorite grandson. And, since I had a bunch of unused 140 gr Sierra HPBT bullets, I loaded them up to see what they’d do. The rifle is an old tang safety M77 Ultralight, and it grouped those bullets amazingly well. I was amazed.

Same point of impact on the vertical axis but stringing left to right sounds like you have a trigger control issue. Probably a combination in your case of not using a good rest and heavy factory trigger. Wouldn't worry about it a whole lot.

Mine has shot well with just about every bullet EXCEPT 140gr Hornady SST, I don't know what it is but they shoot baseball sized groups. It loves the 140gr Interlock BTSP as well as the 140gr Nosler ballistic tip and accubond.
