My big brother and I drew the mid January 2018 hog hunt. Any of you familiar with the area? I'm just wondering what to expect as far as terrain, what other critters are there, etc. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Mark, I hunt just to the east of there. Where are you from? The terrain is hill country, lots of canyons. There are Aoudad there. Are you hunting just during the day or night?

I live in South AR. I've never been to that area, but have trapped West TX for the last 4 or 5 years. The terrain sounds like a couple of the ranches I've been trapping on. My brother is coming in from MT for the hunt. I don't know many details yet, but it's just for 2 or 3 days and I assume just during the day. The way I understand it, we can only shoot hogs. I'm going to call them soon and get all the details. I'm mainly going just to visit with my brother and to see new ground. If I have time I may ask around outside the park and try to find some more ground to trap.......If you know of a pay ranch close by, big brother is hoping to squeeze in another hog hunt while he's there. I'm not sure yet how long I can be gone. Thanks for your interest and the information.

My lease is right next to the park. Our hogs there are never far from water... If I were on that hunt I would google earth the place and find remote water and heavy cover near it. Get up on a bluff and glass. Stay on the rims and skirt the water. There is a cotton field and hay grazer field next to us that they like to stage in cover in our property and then go into the fields at night. Some mornings we catch them out in the open headed back.
Maybe look for neighboring ag land next to cover. It will be a fun hunt if your in decent shape.

I agree with what Wacm said. My place is right on the edge of the canyon and they will filter out at sundown and head to the fields and start returning just before sun up. Bring some high heavy caliber guns because the hogs in this area are huge. I’ve had many take a 30-06 and keep on going. Lots of big sounders and lone boars is what iam seeing at this point in the year. If ya have any more questions feel free to ask.

Hunted the place twice for aoudad. Looked like good hog areas on the eastern side of the park. Use Google Earth and find farm country close to the park. Lots of dry creek beds that hogs travel by.
