Anyone know a place where I can buy live pigeons? I have tried trapping them but no luck. I've called around to some pest control companies and no responses. I'm in Carrollton and am looking to introduce my 4 month old black lab to live birds as she does great with cold ones.

You must be a retriever guy. Homers are very useful in upland training.

Yeah I am. So you keep them in a cage in cover, train dogs to point live birds? I'm just curious.

You release the bird as the dog approaches before he points and before he gets too close. Most dogs , when they encounter this, grow more cautious and begin to point birds. It is a lot easier to put a dog in a situation where they teach themselves to point. When you stop the dog on a bird they tend to look to you when to point..when the dog learns to point after seeing birds flush before he points he becomes more cautious and a stauncher pointer. You want the dog to learn to use his own judgement on when to stand for birds not yours. Obviously as you are not shooting birds yet, having a bird you can reuse because it flies well and recalls well is a real advantage.

I've never used pigeons, but I'm not against using them. I kept a Johnny house. I could turn the quail lose in the spring after I was done.

Using pigeons out of launchers is best as the pigeon will not come down. The pigeon goes back to the loft. Using the quail the quail will come down and a young dog in hot pursuit might catch the quail and get rewarded for a bad habit.

And pigeons may be used with out a Private Bird Hunting Area permit as is required to use pen raised birds that must be banded.

Got a call today from a woman from WI down here to train and do LBJ Grassland NAVHDA and she was told by TPWD she could not set pen raised birds loose at LBJ .

I've been using quail my whole life when training dogs and never had one catch one yet. With that said I'm sure it does happen. But if you're training near brush most birds will fly to it and the dogs are not gonna catch them in the brush.

I have had mine catch quite a few pen raised flight conditioned quail. They are only good for about one or two flushes and that's it and no I don't purposely use them more than once. Homers and launchers for me from here on out.
