I got drawn for Laguna Atascosa Archery Nilgai the first week of December. I understand this is a pretty difficult hunt, high chance of getting busted, and low chance of success.
With that said, has anyone had success out there? If so what was your strategy?
Thanks for the help!

Camp out down wind of a dung pile. Those old blue bulls poop in the same place every day...
Make sure you have heavy arrows. Are you using grizzly stik?

Are you required to hunt out of a Blind/Tripod?
I've never hunted them there, we used to hunt them on the King Ranch.
As hard as it is to believe, we had our best success spot and stalking them, the Dung Pile trick can pay off, but you'll soon find out that there are Dung Piles all over the place, Fence Crossings are another high percentage place, due to they go under the fence, not over or thru it....not sure how many fences are on Atascosa, but it's an option, Water holes are another option, but like the Dung Piles, it could take them days to hit the water hole you're at.
Hope this helps, and good luck they're fun critters to hunt!

Wasn't able to get out for the scouting day but will get in a day or two early to do a bit of scouting. It’s my understanding that you just have to pay regular admission which is like $3.
I'm shooting Gold Tip Arrows with Rage Hypodermic X-treme broadheads. I took two Black Bears with this setup, feel pretty good. If the opportunity presents itself, the key will be shot placement.
Stickchunker how did terrain play into your success? Do pinch points, transition zones, etc… matter? I understand they prefer to be in open spaces to take advantage of good eyesight, how did you get in on them?

We hunted them in the woods, basically stay up on top of the hills in the oaks, and ease along looking form them down in the Mesquite draws, they eat the grass that grows under the Mesquite trees, then we would just put a stalk on them.
Problem with where we hunted there are cows all over the place, so that means trails, it was really hard to define a pinch point, we did have one pasture where they would bed down in the middle of the day, out in the middle of what looked like a dried up lake from several hundred years ago, if you got there before daylight and set up you could catch them coming to that bowl, but there was no way you could get on them after daylight!

I've hunted at Atascosa for awhile now. Set up on the edge of open fields along the brush where you have multiple trail intersections leading out to the open. You'll hear them coming thru the brush. They're not quiet like deer. I've heard them blow real hard before showing up in view, so listen too.I've never had much luck sitting on the dung piles. Google the anatomy of a nilgai. Their vitals are tucked way up in there. Good luck.
