Our lease is just a couple miles east of the HPMMU. Went this weekend to get some stuff done around camp and move some feeders. On the way (and the way back) I started seeing groups on tanks once I got an hour or so west of Ft Worth. We have two decent ponds on the place, one is only about an acre but has lots of groceries. The other is 3.5 acres. The smaller one was holding a couple dozen greys and wigeon, the larger one had well over 100. Decided to take the boat and try to hunt HPMMU on Saturday. The Astros game made us stay up late drinking beer so we decided to try to roll in later than normal. West-ish Texas, nobody cares about ducks out here, right? Got to the ramp, parking lot was full of trucks with DU stickers and empty boat trailers. Turned my arse right around and went back. Was a good nap. Larry- best post I have seen in a LONG time. Glad some fellow members still have a sense of humor and enjoy life in general

That lake was full of ducks Friday and all the hunters blew them out Saturday morning before shooting time.

I'm keeping optimistic tho... the lack of dux will hopefully lighten hunting pressure. I'm hard headed enough to still try going into it with low expectations. I just don't want to have to fight a dozen groups of hunters for a handful of decent spots.

Now that the tide is back to normal I'll be out in full force saturday in the bay. Will start guided hunts after the opener and a after noon scout trip. I have been keeping a eye on my back bays for ducks and they are coming in now.

11/4/17 Report Back to lake 1 Mallards, greys and teal, teal and more teal. Hunters on youth only had some success. Can't wait for the zoo that is opening day. Found some loafing spots so can't decide whether to go in later and let the early birds shoot each other or go early, lay low, and hope they show up at a loafing spot. This was a near full moon so what happened today might not happen next weekend. With all the commotion next weekend they may just head for the coast.

I'm scouting for a private option next year. Maybe a club that does some off season planting. Would like to get the youngest involved in that aspect if he decides to continue.

They are here:mainly gadwall teal and Wigeon. Good buildup yesterday. All holes but one (roosting hole) held good numbers, including group of greaters
Unlikely your mallards are migrators. Probably LF marina park ducks. Bit early for mallard migration to N TX

So do we think this front brought in more ducks or pushed out more ducks than it brought in?

So do we think this front brought in more ducks or pushed out more ducks than it brought in? It brought more birds down in my neck of the woods...went by my best indicator pond this morning and it was holding 700-800 birds. Was only holding about 100 as of Monday. When this pond is at it's peak it will hold 2k-3k birds...mostly pintail, wigeon, gadwall, and teal.

Unlikely your mallards are migrators. Probably LF marina park ducks. Bit early for mallard migration to N TX Normally I would agree, but there are some early migrator greenheads showing up.

I'm with you on that. November mallard migration is quite normal, shorter days trigger migration for many mallards, the rest are forced down bacause of cold weather. Some of my best mallard shoots have been early/mid November.

Only day I could scout this week was yesterday before the front. Had Cranes and Geese roosting. We've never seen that many geese and cranes usually show up in February.
Ducks came in waves of 6-12+ from LST until we left about 30-45 minutes later. Hopefully it will be like that Saturday.
Mostly teal, wigeon, Gaddies with a few mallards and pintails.

Not on private holes 2-20acres that I hunt- I do see primarily mallards at the lake house but not at my hunting holes. I am seeing lots of gadwall‘s teal more teal and then some teal. Few widgeons mixed in. Even saw few blackjacks today

I saw some mallards yesterday and I'm farther south. There are no resident ducks on this private lake.

It might be worth mentioning...if you're in the Dallas area and heading north on Saturday morning to go hunt... The are CLOSING Hwy 75 (both ways) in Plano at Plano Parkway because they are tearing down the bridge. I heard the construction starts at 3 AM on Saturday morning and will last all weekend.
