175 Howitzer Long Tom, the photo was taken just at the perfect time as the shell left the tube in Vietnam. For the curious, the range was about 25 miles.

Cool photo

I'll never forget one time in Iraq we stopped and spent the night in a tiny outpost. We got there at night and fueled up and then went to sleep. I slept on top of my vehicle which was parked about 50 yds from some type of artillery. I was sleeping good when I seen a blue flash and a huge explosion, I thought I was dead I thought it was a mortar landing on me. Scared the chit out of me.

In their infinite wisdom our Battalion was set up along the Cambodian border in a large open area. They had no clue that the water table was about a foot deep. They brought in a Battery of 105's, by the time they had fired a dozen rounds, the 105's had sank into the mud, that Chinooks had trouble lifting them out of the mud when we closed that crapper. LZ Billy only lasted about 4 days, before they moved us again.

Did the gunners wear hearing protection, or just put hands over ears?

A friend in my squad was a former cannon crewmember. He had taken a picture timed just right to catch the gravel being kicked up off the ground with the muzzle flash lighting up the sky, it was pretty awesome. Said one of his guys had his foot behind one of the cleats when they sent one down range. Said he got to leave Afghanistan early missing all 5 toes.

Wow, that is an incredible photo. You can clearly see the lanyard in the soldier's hand. Very cool.

When you stand behind a howitzer, it's easy to see the projo go flying through the air. On the 8" guns, it's quite an impressive sight.

From the other direction, apparently one can see naval artillery rounds on the way inbound. During Jutland and similar, it must have been quite the gut check to be an observer watching the inbound 15" shells coming right at you ... and from a distance, they all look like they're coming right down your binos until they suddenly veer away.

Re my previous commend: It's worth noting that, as a general rule, one doesn't stand behind a howitzer unless it's some considerable distance back. Really bad things happen to those who stand immediately behind howitzers.
