When you throw in the average life span of each animal then it's actually worse to kill the deer.

My point is: you kill every 7 year old deer (which ain't going to happen and we know it), it takes 7 years to grow them back. You kill every 60 year old gar (which we don't know if we are on the road to doing or not), it takes 60 years to grow them back. The difference: 53 years.

The main point is we are steeped in deer knowledge and management of them is detailed and ongoing.
Alligator gar? Not so much.

You can legally only take one or two 7 year old bucks a year.
Yet, you can legally take one 60 year old alligator gar every day.

But if he only kills one a year then he isn't part of the problem. The problem is bag limits and not people killing 60 yr old fish.

I never said he alone was the or even a problem. Not enough information. IDK if he kills one or five or twenty a year.

I do know that some people kill a good many.

I do know that the law allows anyone to kill one a day.

I'm concerned that might not be a good thing. Bag limits might be called for. Heck, I don't even know if they are or not. I'm not an expert on the subject. Just know I wouldn't want big, old alligator gar to go away.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

I don't have a problem with it. Congrats to the new record holding angler.

Keep in mind also that killing alligator gar and not either consuming it or using it for bait is also illegal. The old using it for fertilizer is also illegal.

Waste of fish
It is unlawful to leave edible fish or bait fish taken from the public waters of the state to die without the intent to retain the fish for consumption or bait.

The state has started to recognize the decline in alligator gar populations. That’s why the 1 fish a day limit was put in place. They also can ban hunting them to protect their numbers when spawning is taking place.

Restrictions to Protect Spawning Alligator Gar

When conditions such as water temperature and flooding events would be conducive for spawning of alligator gar, the TPWD Executive Director may temporarily prohibit taking or attempting to take alligator gar in a specified area for a period not to exceed 30 days. Conditions that would be used to invoke this action include water temperatures between 68 and 82°F and occurrence of moderate flood levels as defined and reported by U.S. Geological Survey gauges. Notice of this action will be posted on this web page, distributed to print and broadcast media, and shared through appropriate social media accounts. The notice will specify the area to be closed and when lawful fishing for alligator gar may resume.

During May, fishing for, seeking, or taking alligator gar is prohibited in the portion of Lake Texoma within the boundaries of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and from the U.S. 377 bridge upstream to the IH 35 bridge.

No additional restrictions for alligator gar are in effect at this time.
