If your gun likes the SST, why change? It should easily wreck either one.

I have been using 6.8s for almost 10 years and have ran damned near every bullet as well as factory load out there. For a long time I ran the 95TTSX, Bill Wilson and I were early testers of pre production bullets. In theory, it's the perfect bullet for the 6.8, if you want to handload to get them max velocity/potential.
Killed a lot of stuff with them.
Having said that, the last few years I have been running the 120SST factory load, not a smoking hot round but VERY effective on everthying, deer, pigs and coyotes.
I have 3 6.8s, two 16"s and an 11.3"
They just work. I know Todd Huey with Lonestarboars (does all the thermal videos) runs them as well.

I could see that. I use the Fed Fusion 115gr exclusively, but 95% of my hunting is deer. I've killed one coyote with it but I really didn't examine the bullet performance.

interesting.. well, both died right?
It's hard to predict bullet performance.. I have personally had great performance and totally trust it. Hunted the last few days (deer) with it...

I hear ya. our lease is thick as well, even in the open areas the grass can be tall and it's damned hard to find something, especially deer due to color. I was giving some unsolicited advise to a new guy on the lease, younger and pretty green to hunting. I was telling him about how hard it can be to find a deer if they run even 50 yards and why I do neck or high shoulder shots, very, very seldom will I take a heart shot.

if facing me, I give a quick little whistle and they look and freeze, white patch of the neck. side profile I just center the neck and squeeze quatering towards me I might go low where the neck meets the chest
run? they don't, I watch them drop in the scope and them watch them for a few minutes

Well, the 120 grain is a heavier bullet for the 6.8. Hornady shows it running 2460 fps in a 24" barrel. Out of an 11.5" SBR, you should lose about 20-25 fps per inch. That puts you at about 300 fps less fps, so you are running about 2160 out of the muzzle. Most bullets need about 2200 fps to have some expansion. At impact speeds of 50+ yards, you will certainly be running less than that, probably around 2050 fps. So the bullet is going too slow at impact speeds for reliable expansion. You will need to drop down to a lighter weight lead bullet. If you go with the 85 grain TSX solid copper bullet, you will have the same issue. The TSX bullets need good speed to open up, and will have less shock than a lead bullet also. If expansion and quick kill shots is what you want, then the solid copper would be going the wrong direction.
Something like the 90 grain Sierra HP would be ideal for your SBR. I'm showing about 3000-3100 fps in an SPC 2 chamber. In an 11.5" barrel, that should run about 2700 fps, and should reliably open up for you.
My hunting partner runs a 110 grain Sierra SP Pro Hunter in a 16" suppressed AR. He's pushing it hard and fast, and it will flat out hammer pigs and small critters. I have killed 2 pigs with his rifle, and that little bullet did great. In your SBR, I'd pick up some speed by going lighter, like the 90 grain. If you can't find any factory ammo, let me know and I can load you some up.

I didn't catch he was running an SBR good points Chad My brother has been running primarily 110 ABs out of his 11.3" (we both have Wilson Combat barrels) I just put mine together and have only shot a few hogs with it.

Chad,
2460 FPS is out of a 16" barrel according to Hornady. It's right on when I checked my 16" AR. My 18.5" Ruger Ranch showed 2525 fps with th 120 SST factory ammo.
Edit- I see Hornady updated their website so I know where you found it now. It used to state using a 16" barrel. Either they changed the load of the website is incorrect. My magneto speed on the ammo I have gets 2460 in a 16" barrel.

I shoot 110 grain Accubonds with 28.6 grains of AA2200. Velocity is 2766 out of an 18" ARP barrel. I get .5" groups at 100 yards and it is devastating to hogs and yotes. I can't wait to take a deer with my 6.8 this year.
God bless John Wayne!

120 SSTs for me. Round performs excellent out of my gun. My daughter double lung a cull buck last year and it dropped DRT. My buck took a SST to the heart last year and never took a step.

120 sst was made for 6.8 velocities and will exand reliable down to 1700 fps, as so many have tested it and Hornady has also stated. The 120 sst was specifically made for the 6.8 velocities. My 12.5" barrel sbr gets 2415 using factory hornady 120 sst, which puts the expansion out past 400 yards. I also use the federal 6.8 xm 90 grain which run 2715 out of my 12.5" barrel. Chad, the hornady factory 120 sst velocity is out of a 16" barrel, not a 24", as per Hornady. Lots of great reading about extensive testing on expansion 6.8 bullets. http://68forums.com/forums/showthread.php?102937-Hornady-120-SST-performance-at-pistol-speeds50 pages of discussion of expansion using 6.8 bullets and extensive testing by member xman at various yardages, not just numbers pulled out of the air. http://68forums.com/forums/showthread.php?33178-6-8-SPC-Bullet-Performance
