These big bucks have a way of disappearing for a while, like they know when the season starts...and ends.

its amazing how they do that isnt it. its not uncommon for me to see 15-20 different bucks in a day or 2 and rarely if ever see a big mature one even though you know they are around. and people think muelys are stupid!!!

Very perceptive ST. These are sandhills bucks. We have been out there for going on 12 years now. For some unknown reason (to me) these bucks are huge bodied deer, much larger than Trans Pecos mule deer, and also the deer you find in Southern NM in the Guadalupe's. The mature bucks we killed were so large, we used to weight them on the ranch foreman's cotton scales. Many of them had a live weight (prior to field dressing) of 320lbs +/-. These are a good example too:

Those are two nice deer. The second one will out score the first one but his mass and width are really cool. If you locate and stay with the does through the rut, the biggest bucks in the area will eventually show themselves. They'll travel several miles during the rut.

I hunted the western Texas panhandle for 25 years for mule deer and 300 pound deer were not uncommon. Also horn size can surprise most people if not from the area. These are sand hill deer with surrounding farm ground. I've taken many 160-170 class bucks plus one non-typical that grossed 203" and the state record non-typical archery buck that officially scored 222 6/8's.

My dad and I use to have a place up north of Childress by the river years ago. They got this big. My dad took one over 300 lbs. It was the best kind of hunting....free.

Have they ever figured out if the panhandle mule deer are desert muleys or not? I've been told they are Rocky Mountain mule deer

I talked to a guy that had a buck in his truck that scored 211" and weighed 312 lbs on the hoof.

Said he killed it in the Sandhills in pecos county but I'm not sure where that is

Deer looked like a horse

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
