I like both a lot, but I’d have to go with the standing pose.

I think a big part of that decision rides on the location you have to put him. I built my house around my Dall mount, so I knew what I was going to do before I even hunted him. Since then I have to pick the spot that I want the trophy to live, and then adjust from there on what looks best.

I have a friend here who did a Dall laying down and it turned out nice.

Did Dewey mount your desert?

No but going a different route this time.

Honestly, I was 100% set on the lying down pose for 3 reasons:
1)He was lying down just before I shot him;
2)I think the lying down pose looks much better on the wall and, thus, gives me several more options on where to put him; and
3)my desert is already mounted in a similar standing pose as the one above.

But when I saw that particular standing pose, I really liked the look of it - particularly the "cliff" feel. He was taken near the mountaintop in some pretty rugged terrain.

Desert for reference:

It's a personal preference of course but I've never been thrilled by the lying down sheep, they are pretty but I think it takes away from the body size too much. It can still be easily hung on the wall.

The Dall was at least 1/3 bigger than the desert (estimating 275 vs. 175). Although I knew that would be the case, the difference on the ground was striking. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dall was actually 300+ live weight. He was fat, fat, fat.

Thanks for all the input guys.

If I go with lying down will probably slim him down a little. Here's a field pic of his fat self. He was definitely preparing for winter.

Nice field pic.

I like both poses but of the two I like standing better. As many have said that, it depends on where you're fitting it in - as you know.

Where was the hunt and with who?

My botnet is bigger than yours.

I know the good lord says to not covet, but boy is hard not too when I see those two sheep!

I'd say go with the laying down pose. It's what you had planned, and it sounds like it fits your space better, so quit looking and pictures and get him done!

My ram from the same area was a fat boy also, yet my brothers was quite a bit smaller.

He was just big all over AJ! Lol Tim just sent him to taxidermist last week so I'm going as fast as I can. smile

I really appreciate everyone weighing in.

If I didn't already have one, I would definitely do the standing pose. Because of the way the hunt went and where I want him to go, I'm going to stick with my original plan and go with the lying down pose. I am going to turn his head in at about a 45 degree angle though.

I like the lying down pose, primarily because he is my ram and in my house. LOL. All jokes aside, everyone that comes in my house loves that mount/pose.
Yukon is a special place !!!

I meant to add......Dawayne Dewey has his own line of sheep forms that your taxi can order. He actually sculpted a form for my ram because those old Yukon rams are so big bodied. Just a thought..

Thanks Buzz I'm going to turn his head in 45 degrees - mainly to accentuate his long side a little.

AJ what I meant was yours was big all over. Mine was fat but not big all over like yours.
