Last time I was out, 2 weeks ago, had a pretty productive night with 3 dead in front of me by say 9:30pm. I had to quit because the more I shot, the more cows came to stare at the hogs taking a dirt nap. Had so many cows I was uneasy shooting any more around them. Strangest thing, they'd walk on up and most just stood there and stared at the hogs, several were there for well over an hour looking at the first one. Don't' know if they were taking bets on if they'd pop back up or not.

I've noticed the same behavior at times. I think they're just curious.

Hogs will often commingle with cattle and cattle accept them as compatriots. They often treat a downed hog much the same as they would treat one of their own if it was shot and killed.

LOL, smart is relative. Cows are very good at being cows. Humans, elephants, whales, and many primates take a very strong interest in the dead and they are quite smart.

What we haven't seen in this forum yet, is someone sneaking up on a sounder with either a cow cutout or a cow costume. Now THAT would be something! smile

^^^^^^^ There's your answer folks. Cows are incredibly stupid beasts. I place them on par with certain single celled organisms. wink

That's a good thing in some respects, since it makes it easy to turn them into leather, hamburger, brisket, etc....

I am having trouble following the correlation of stupidity causing a fascination with death. Cattle may not be Einstein's, but that does not explain the interest in dead hogs.

Actually, I've found cows to be pretty dang smart.

Once, when trying to wean a calf, we brought the calf to another property a half-mile away from the area which held the mama cow. Even though the calf had never seen the area, it made it through three fences and some neighbor's property to get back home - twice!
Finally we decided to leave the calf where it was and bring mama to the other property. We loaded her into a trailer and drove her down the road, up a quarter-mile driveway, around the barns, through another couple of gates, and into a corral. We had left the gates open, knowing we were going to drive back out the same way we'd entered. As soon as the cow got out of the trailer she took off, retracing the path we'd driven. She'd never before seen the territory, but she traced the route back perfectly! Luckily we were able to take a short-cut through a field and head her off, otherwise she'd have probably made it out onto the public road and boogied back to junior!

I think they just act stupid. They can be pretty clever when it suits their purposes!

Sounds like an impromptu funeral of sorts,........................." He was a a good hog",..............

smart, don't think so, when the fires hit Ks & Ok, cows were seen grazing with fire coming right at them, after they were lined up dead just like they were when the fire consumed them. comparing elephant brain to cow is like lion to house cat.

I had the exact same experience as the OP about two weeks ago with a dead hog and a bunch of cows. It did look like a funeral. As they stood around looking, they took turns gently licking on the hog, as if trying to revive it.

A couple years ago, I shot a buck right at last light. After quickly checking and tagging it, I left to get my vehicle to load it up. When I returned, a dozen or so cows were standing around it. The deer was wet with cow slobber.

Ya! I’ve experienced that a bunch. I wonder if they think it’s a dead calf?

Had the same thing happen in Wyoming on a pronghorn hunt. It is all open range where we hunt, and I shot a nice buck that was down in a draw. There were a few cows about 150 yards from the goat, and when he went down, they came over to check him out. They hung around until we got pretty close.

Shot a boar one time that had his head up the dried up hide of a dead cow. Looked like a bulldozer pushing trees. .308 did him good.

I wish stupidity was not so handsomly rewarded.

That sounds silly, but could be fun.
I know a guy that hunts pronghorns from behind a horse. He walks his horse out in the field using it as cover, and then will position himself to shoot as he moves the horse out of his way. He bow hunts them successfully like this at 30-40 yards generally. He said the pronghorns never suspect any threat from a six legged horse.
