Whatever patterns best in the shotgun I'm shooting that day. Which happens to be Kent silver steel # 3, in the two that I shoot most frequently.

Remington Hypersonics work good in my shotgun also had good luck with Estate cartridges. Nut that is just my gun. Results may differ.

I prefer 1.25oz of nickel plated buffered lead 5s at 1300fps.
However, since that's illegal i shoot the backlog of Remington hevishot shells I have stockpiled, or the Remington HD shells I have stockpiled, or my hw-13 hand loads. I still have a few boxes of the original hevisteel too.
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

of course there will be the "in the decoys it doesn't matter people" but handloaded 2-3/4" 1-1/4 oz bismuth around 1330-50fps in #2s and #5s depending on the kind of duck/goose hunt. sometimes tungsten in the 2s, but normally bismuth to keep the cost down a little. that load is just like shooting lead. makes zero physical sense to shoot steel, downrange velocity isn't there, ft/lbs of knockdown isn't even close in any shot size especially at any distance past 35 yds.

This thread has made me wish I knew anything about making handloads.

it's not nearly as complicated as some people try to make it. you save some vs buying tungsten, bismuth, h13, etc but the main factor for me is readily having a load that I like that shoots well. save quite a bit when loading 28ga

My gun likes the Federal duck loads in either 2 or 3 shot. It does not like Remington loads at all.

Shells and chokes are over rated. Practice practice practice that's what makes you a better wingshooter. I shoot year round I also duck and goose hunt all over the country your kill ratio will go way up if practice all that being said the cheap shells will kill just as good as the expensive shells
If it bleeds I can KILL IT

I shoot whatever 2 3/4" number 3's and 4's I can find cheapest. Never had a problem killing birds with cheap shells and I never noticed much difference when I did buy expensive ones.

It'll change your mind, especially when you realize the center of your pattern isn't where you are aiming, or at 40 yds you have gaps so big in your pattern that could cause misses and/or cripples. No doubt practice at anything will make your success rate much higher but, I can assure you that all chokes and shells are not created equal. It will vary from shotgun to shotgun, but that definitely doesn't mean you have to use an aftermarket choke with $25/box shells. On the contrary, when I pattern mine, I intentionally pick 4 or 5 shells that aren't going to run $200/case. But I do appreciate cleaner burning powders and pellet uniformity.
