A really long time ago i was scouting for ducks at Richland Chambers.
Long enough ago that you could still shoot ducks with lead.
I was driving the backroads looking for walk in access.

I came across an old man in his late 70's early 80's and a skinny kid around 11 or 12.
Of course not a spot of camo on either one and I cant remember if the kid had on the standard issue overalls or just his grandpa. They both looked like they could sure use a deer.

Grandpa was carrying the gun. A single shot 12 ga. with a radiator clamp holding on the barrel and multiple wraps of electrical tape holding the buttstock together at the wrist.

Not a thing in the world wrong with a speck of any of that. (except that it's illegal to shoot off a public roadway) No telling how many deer that old man had killed with that gun during his life. Probably lived there on the same home place way before the lake was even talked about being built.

I wish I had a black and white photo of them - it reminded me of a lot of photos of rural life in the 1930's.
It made an image in my mind that I can still see. Like something that could have been in a life magazine way back when on rural east central Texas back in the day.

I know the game warden could have written him a ticket if caught in the act of firing that gun at a deer while he was walking down that roadway. To be honest, that thought didn't even cross my mind at the time.
Thinking back now, I have a feeling the local JP would have probably dismissed the ticket if one ever got written.
