What are the advantage of an eleven degree crown over a stepped crown?

The target crown allows for a more 'resistance free' release of the gases so that effect on the bullet is minimized. Whether this makes much difference in most shooting situations I wouldn't know, I've seen plenty of very accurate rifles with stepped crowns. P_102

Doesn’t matter, get what you prefer and like the look of. It’s basically if you draw a good barrel or not. I like the stepped look.

Do bench rest shooters use a certain style of crown? How about long distance shooters?

Judd shoots bench rest and is very good, as stated above he prefers stepped crowns. I believe I've seen stepped crowns on 1 or 2 of Chads rifles but that's going from memory. P_102

Not sure that any are better. The main thing is making sure that inside edge (the actual crown) does not become damaged. The stepped crown can help prevent the crown from getting damaged. Some say the step can create turbulence that could affect the bullet.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

As long as the crown is milled square and clean then it will shoot if not damaged.

I don't know the answer to this question but whatever crown Morgan put on my barrels I had him thread have definitely increased accuracy.

The stepped crown can be an 11 degree crown. The step is to protect the crown.
I always use an 11 degree because Lester Bruno said he uses it.
Some try to improve accuracy by using sandpaper to "clean it up ". Don't do that.

The best crown I've seen is.....on my custom 22lr. I took the rifle to Scott Weichel at live Oak Accuracy and he cut a new crown on this Shilen Ratchet 0.850” straight contour. I don't remember how he calls it and it will cost a little more than other shops; but the execution, shape and the mirror polish are just perfect. Here's some pics.

All of mine have an 11°.
They're a bit easier to clean carbon out of than recessed.

The importance of the crown is, its last thing to touch the bullet so it has to be machined as perfect as possible.
