It's that time of year, where all I can do is watching hunting videos and repack all my gear over and over again. I am so ready for the new season.
However, something I saw on the YOUTUBE (which we all know is always factual, and NEVER wrong) was a number of hunters creating water holes to hunt over.
So I present the question to the experts in here...
I have a tank/pond on my place that is usually empty. Would putting some sort of plastic tub or tarp in the bottom of it hold the water longer when it rains to stop it from seeping through the soil, or would it be a waste of time?

They sell liners for tanks. Not sure on prices but worth looking into.

Most all wildlife needs water and appreciate it outside of diet intake, providing water in a dry environment can only be a good thing IMO. Many hunters have used totes to supply water on their property, I say whatever you can do to provide a constant supply and you should benefit greatly.
I once was on a West Texas lease where there was water storage tanks with basins and kept them off limits for hunting, safe zones sts..Water pulls in a lot of game....

my dad's lease is in west texas, south of ozona. its pretty arid country, but the ranch has several windmills that they use to pipe water to troughs throughout the ranch. most of the troughs have a blind nearby, and we see a lot of deer visiting the trough on a regular basis.

Everything needs water. I draw the line at hunting water holes. I have no problem putting out feeders and I rationalize that with saying that's like hunting a salt lick, of a pecan grove, but I just can't bring myself to hunt watering places.

In our area (very sandy soil) they sometimes line tanks with clay to get them to hold water better. Crushed bentonite works well too.

Indians did it and it's been done since man started hunting. I don't see anything unethical about it but to each his own.

Before you go to the expense of lining a tank, just get a trough at the feed store. Just be able to dump it and replace it when the water gets nasty. If you get two, you can syphon water from your truck into the one on the ground. Should be lots cheaper than buying a huge liner. Plus the hogs won't get into a trough.

You can build a small tin roof, gutter it and place a water trough or cistern underneath it.

My girlfriends family has property that has not been hunted in 6 years, no feeders set for a long period of time but has a pond that never drys in the middle of the property. We went out last weekend to check and found fresh deer tracks down a main trail leading to the pond and around the whole pond. Build it and they will come/stay!
Her and I are ending the long stretch of no hunting out there this year.

If I've learned anything, it is that water is always a good thing to have on your property. Bentonite, which is a clay, will work well.

Build a guzzler or use tote and build a separate concrete "pond". This is what we had at our place in Ruidoso, we cut about 9" off the top and bottom of plastic barrels, dug a hole and back filled the edges. We only keep them full when we are there, the rest of the time mother nature either provides or the deer have to go to the river. If I was going to make one for a pasture, I would get a oil change pan, and use it for an inside mold for a concrete version like the one in the pic.

I set out a360 gallon tank during the 2010-11 drought. All the animals still use it. Make sure to put a bord or stick in it so small animals can get out. It should be long enough to rest onthe rim w
There's only 2 seasons in a year. Deer season and getting ready for deer season.
