Read and article saying that some wart hogs have been killed in South Texas around Dimmit County. Since they are good borrowers it was pretty easy to get out of their high fence. Even thought they are pretty far south and considering the prolific breeding of traditional ferrell hogs all over the state, I cant help but wounder if the wart hog population might explode as well and how quick they might expand into other counties over time...just a thought.

Warthogs are not as adaptive as feral pigs. They will be limited by several environmental factors such as cold weather/rain fall etc. They are diurnal and are relatively easy to hunt because of this. Working in there favor is they have very few peradators here with the only one I am thinking of being mountain lions. They also don't carry the long list of diseases that feral pigs do.

Just what we need more HOGS. Cool looking critters but we have enough of a hog problem.

just like hogs....you kill one you have killed them all in terms of trophy hunting

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think a big warthog makes a much more interesting trophy than a big feral hog. That said, they dig holes, etc., and are probably not a wise long term addition to our native wildlife.

Agreed. We have enough hogs already but it would be neat to shoot a warthog. The only problem then is explaining to my wife why I took another animal to the taxidermist.

Pertnear, I heard they are about the size of a regular hog but they taste chicken.

Warties will get to about 300 lbs (that would be a huge one) . They are survivors, native land has lions, leopards, hyenas......no end to the large predators.
They don't interbreed with feral hogs. What would keep them in check is they breed once a year and have a long gestation, small litters.
I enjoyed hunting warties where they belong, a big one is an impressive trophy. They deserve more respect than just target practice.
As for warthog in Texas I don't have the answer. As with any non indigenous species no good is going to come from them. It would be "cool" to seen them but they are eating someone who belongs here dinner.
