I've loaded several in the past, but always used a standard Federal LR primer. Is a magnum primer needed for this round? Seems like I've looked it up before and people have different opinions as to whether it's needed or not. The rounds with the standard LR primers shot fine, I was just checking to see if the magnum would work better. Oh, it'd be fore H1000 powder or RL22, and about to try a 180 gr. bullet. Thanks.

I use magnum primers in 300 win mag. All of my manuals recommend them as well.

For paper punching, F210M's cut my group sizes in half compared to F215M's with IMR 4831 and H1000.

For hunting in cold weather, 40's and below, the F215 would get the nod though.

Technically, I'll explain what the ATK tech experts told me about "primer school".

Standard primers (Fed 210, CCI #200, etc) are good for igniting your normal sized 308 and 30-06 family of cases.

Magnum primers are called for when igniting powder charges over about 65 to 75 grains case capacity, especially with slower burning powders. And not all magnum primers are created equal.

On the scale of how "hot" a magnum primer is... The CCI #200 and Fed 210 is a standard primer. The Federal 215 and Rem 9 1/2 M are the 2 hottest magnum primers. The CCI #250 falls in between the standard primer and Fed 215, Rem magnum primers. The CCI #250 primers are not recommended for powder charges over about 70-80 grains. The #250 primer simply is not hot enough for the slow burning powders found in the large cases with slow burning rifle powders, like in a 338 Lapua. Many years ago I had loaded up some 338 Lapua ammo with 250 grain bullets and CCI #250 primers. A customer was complaining of some hang fires and a few failure to fire. I had some more of this ammo so I went to the range to test it. Sure enough, hang fires and one failure to fire. Why??? I called ATK (the parent company of Federal, CCI, and others) and spoke to their lead tech about primers. He explained all this to me. He said the CCI #250 is "listed" as a magnum primer, because it is hotter than a standard primer, but is not as hot as other magnum primers. The hang fires were due to not properly igniting the 92+ grains of slow burning powder I was using in the 338 Lapua. He said I must use the Fed 215 or Rem mag primers for this. That's when I switched over to all Fed 215's for any magnum cases. I have not had an issue since.

Can a Fed 210 (standard) primer ignite a 300 WM case- yes. Can a Fed 215 mag primer be used for a 308 Win- yes. You can certainly interchange the standards and magnum primers, and in normal conditions, it "should" work. But if you load up a 300 WM with lots of slow burning powder with a Fed 210 and you are shooting in cold weather, you can easily have an issue with a hang fire. The proper primer for anything with magnum in the cartridge title "should" use a magnum primer.

How I load my ammo- If it's a standard case, like a 308 or 30-06 family size, I'll use a Fed 210 (I have 10's of thousands of them). Sometimes, I'll use a #250 or Fed 215 for a 30-06 case if I'm running a slow burning powder with a heavy bullet. I think a #250 would be a good choice for any 30-06 cases with about 55-60 grains of powder. Anything 65 grains or more powder, I will ALWAYS use a Fed 215 primer. I want the primer to be the correct primer in all applications of the ammo.

Also, the proper primer depth is .003"-.008" deep (below flush). I try and load my ammo with a primer depth of .003"-.004" below flush as the sweet spot. Anything deeper than .008" can have issues.

Hope this helps!

Yep. Have heard the Remington 91/2 Magnums referred to as flame throwers and I seem to remember someone posting slow motion pictures of flame from various primers a while back.

After reading this thread why do I feel an urge, maybe a "need", to replace my Winchester WLRM primers for my 300 Win Mag?

No need for the change with the Win Mag, your WLRM will work fine. I do not go to the 215s unless using one really big cartridges unless if planning on hunting in single digit or below temps. By really big I mean 300Wby or larger case like RUM, 30-378, Lapua. 7mm STW size. Then again I do not load for many like those anymore.

@Tipps..... I learned this lesson the hard way while loading .257wby; The load data called for "Large Rifle Primer" and I used standard CCI primers that I use for my .270win- I primed all 100+ cases I had and loaded 20 test rounds to take to the range and the results were multiple hang fires and failures to fire..... Hence why I always use magnum primers(Winchester) in all my "magnum" calibers now.

I use RL22 Powder in .300win for both 180gr. Hornady BTSP and 200gr. Nosler Partitions; with Winchester Magnum primers and have had great results and ZERO issues.
