Going to take a day off work on either opening weekend or the second weekend to make it a 3 day weekend. Initially was planning on doing it for the opener but I see that it will be a full moon that weekend and thinking it might be a waste of vacation day and might be better to take it the following weekend. Thoughts?

Go the first week-end, if the moon makes them feed at night them just hunt for longer periods. Good luck

some of the best hunting is mid day during full moon ... they eat at night, lay down as the moon sets, then up again mid day for a snack

Opening weekend.

Find out when the full moon is at its peak. It could be morning, afternoon or the middle of the day.

If it peaks in the middle of the night, hunt the middle of the day.

On our lease with deer and hogs, if the moon is full they all feed at night and rarely move during the daytime. But, I will be there they both weekends but am taking extra couple of days off for second weekend.

If I had to choose one I'd go 2nd weekend. With the 1/4 moon the moon will be overhead/underfoot at dawn/dusk. Major times on the solunar tables. In our area the rut will be kicking in also.

I'm not sure what area you're hunting, but I take my extra time around Thanksgiving. Temps are usually cooler and I have a better chance of hitting the rut. Much more activity in my area during that time period.

I've contemplated this very question many times over the years. I would always contemplate a full moon weekend of whether or not to go. At this point opening rifle weekend has turned into a tradition no matter the moon or weather. We hunt regardless but enjoy the mid-day antics of acting like 12 year olds and quite possibly blowing up a hog carcass with tannerite that someone killed that morning. Just go for it and make it fun.

That's always a hard choice. Seeing that you are now within the 10 day forecast for opening weekend, it looks to be 60's to 80's and raining leading up to opening bow weekend (for Hallettsville). I've always liked hunting in the rain (or after a rain), if you can stay somewhat dry. So, one more thing to consider.

I think it depends more on what part of the state you're in and when the rut kicks in. If the answer is "lots later than either of these weekends," then I'd go the first one.

I want to hunt with you! Blowing up things with some tannerite sounds like good times!

It's opening weekend/week for me. The cooler weather seems to get them moving a lot more.

Yep! Once blew up 4 old hams and several bags of corn at end of season. It was absolute carnage especially when played back on video in slow motion.

Here in Breckenridge the 3rd weekend seems to always be the best for Rut. But I go every weekend, and most days during the week. grin

Depends on where and who you hunt with.
