That is the same gun a cousin in Mississippi hunted with. he killed the second biggest 6pt I have ever seen with that rifle.

Outfitters I hunted with use the Remington 760 in 30-06 for their deer, antelope and elk guns. If it works and ain't broke use it.

Old news that can be ignored.

Now days set the scope at the height that is most comfortable for the shooter, and that provides natural point of aim.
this is often over looked, if its uncomfortable to use the scope it can be to low (shooters with long necks) have seen this many times

I have had it since 07' and it was gone though very well as it had sat idle since 1992. My grandfather has kept if for me in his safe until this year and he goes through all his stuff once a year. This rifle has less than 40 rounds through it I would imagine. I really appreciate the compliments guys cheers

Reminds of my pops, no telling how many boxes of Federal he ran through his '06. In my honest moments I admit I still lean towards Federal ammo, that's what he liked to shoot.

I'm betting it will come close to 1", the trigger will test you, and it will kick. I like it! I would probably get another box of ammo for preliminary sight in so I could hang on to more of the Gibsons ammo.

Josh, That's a really cool rifle and I like the idea of keeping it period correct. With the low shot count, it could be a shooter if the muzzle crown hasn't been buggered up yet. I had a 760 - same barrel in a pump that shot really good. My brother had a machine shop and made me a delrin rod guide that slid onto the muzzle end and centered the rod so i could use a Dewey. I know bore snakes are not supposed to mess up the crown but be really careful. They lose accuracy quick when that crown gets dinged up.

If you reload, try some sierra 125 pro-hunter with load worked up toward the high end. Accurate in 3 different guns with that barrel and devastating on whitetail. Just don't get close to the backstraps LOL. At a 200 yd zero they could go to 300 yds and still kill quick. but I guess there is really better guns and better bullets for that range now. We hunted with what he had and got the most out of them we could get with the hand loads. Lots of DRTs and the ones that weren't didn't go far at all with those 125's assuming it was a good shot placement. I think the last one i killed was at 210 yds and he just collapsed in his tracks.

I ran a fixed 4x redfield wide view on mine till I could afford a Leupold 3-9
For what it's worth, i think the rings you picked are a lot sturdier than those see-throughs which were pretty popular back then when your grandpa got it. Seeing the front post like others said isn't an issue.

Man, I really Hope you get to pass that on down to one of your sons or grandsons some day. cheers

Dig the rifle Josh. When you want to load up something for it, let me know. I promise no blown primers or case head separations. angel

Buzz, you were right. Earnie's stuff is top of the line. Very happy with how this turned out and how proud papaw would have been to carry this rifle. May take a day off next week and go to the range and get the last step complete. Other than that this rifle is done
cheers
