I got two diamondbacks at the lease this weekend, the first was only about 3.5 feet, the second was every bit of 5 with 14 rattles. I skinned them both out, fleshed the hides, and put them in a 50/50 mix of glycerin and alcohol Sunday night. Once a day I've been taking the hides out of the mix and putting them back in a different way to make sure I get even coverage.
Today, I took the smaller one out, and it's looking good. Looks like it's progressing just like the last (and only other) one I did.
The bigger one, it's got a film on the inside of the skin like I didn't get all the flesh off. He was significantly thicker and meatier than the 3.5 footer, he'd been eating well. I spent 3 hours Sunday night fleshing him, even rinsed it twice and pulled off any stragglers I saw.
Question is, will the alcohol/glycerin dry the film enough that it won't rot once I take it out? Should I do anything else with it prior to letting it dry? I was planning on leaving both of them in the mix until tomorrow or Thursday.
I really, really don't want to mess up the big one, it's the biggest one I've ever seen in real life.

Peg it out (gently stretched)on a board flesh side up brush your 50/50 solution on it. Any flesh or residue left will come off. after 24 hours unpeg turn it over and repeat the process then let it dry and mount on a board or a leather belt blank. There is no need to remove the rattles if mounting on a board. I have done this many times works much better than leaving it submerged in the solution.

Thanks Red Cloud, I'll try that next time. Submerging it works, but it's a mess.
Sapper, I bought several bottles in walmart, they were with the foot care stuff for some reason. Like athletes foot creams and such. And you want denatured alcohol apparently, like they sell at Home Depot by the gallon. Supposed to work better than the isopropyl.

Your welcome Shotgun. Another helpful hint, I had better results with 90% alcohol than with 70%. They used to sell glycerin at Walgreens.

I use to use antifreeze and soak for a month. then nail on board and wash completely with borax soap and the soften with Jergens had lotion. worked great.

KC Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy. _________________

Not really. There will be two good videos, five more that show exactly what not to do, and after a while I end up watching videos of dogs falling down stairs...
