Federal small rifle match primers or CCI small rifle Primers?

Both are good primers...the CCI cups are harder and will handle more pressure...especially if you don't have a bushed bolt.

I used the Fed 205 primers for a lot of ammo I shot and sold. But if you get some higher pressure rounds, the primer cup will pierce fairly easy. I switched to the CCI #450 primers and had very good results. It's a little hotter primer than the 205, and the primer cup is thicker and will handle pressure better. I bought 250,000 each of the #400 and #450 primers, and that's all I use now. I like the CCI primers.

The primer cup thickness on the 205's are .020" and the #450 are .025".

I haven't used the Federal, but I can vouch for Chad on the CCI. He loaded up a bunch of ammo for my 223 using CCI 450 primers and I haven't had any primer issues at all and the ammo shoots very accurately.

Started loading my own with CCI 400 and 450 and they have worked well too.

6.5Creedmoor...the barrel is only 21" long so I would like to run them a little hotter so it sounds like CCI.

Ok, yes. If you are running the 205 primers on small primer 6.5 CM brass with a large rifle firing pin (normal 308 type action), you will want to use a magnum primer with a thick primer cup. I would not use the Fed 205 primer at all in the 6.5 CM then. I would recommend the CCI #450 or #41 primers for your application.

Yes. I'm not saying you will have an issue running a Fed 205 primer with the large firing pin. But some rifles do have this issue, including mine with a 6.5x47 Lapua with small primer brass. I'm running a Surgeon 591 action, which is (was) a standard 308 type action with large firing pin. I just had Gre Tan bush my bolt and convert it to a small firing pin with small firing pin hole. Before this, I was running 140 VLD's at 2760 fps and out of 100 rounds I would pierce about 10-15 primers. Each time, it would send back debris and crud into the bolt and trigger. After a few pierced primers, I started having trigger issues during a shooting match. I was running CCI #450 primers, which helps, but does not eliminate the issue. If I were running Fed 205's, I would be piercing every single primer, no doubt. I've seen this on another rifle I worked on a few years ago with a 6.5x47, large firing pin and Fed 205's. Each round was a pierced primer, and I was at my low end starting loads running slow. I switched to CCI #41's, and it solved this issue on that rifle. Mine, I'm just running my load a little warm, and pressure is getting up there with this batch of ammo. Using a #450 or #41 primer will help reduce the chance of having a pierced primer with a large firing pin.

These Federal's have a tougher cup and I have used them on high pressure loads in the 22 Creedmoor with large firing pin in SR Lapua brass with no issues.
