Been ready to plant my plot, but need some rain in NTX!! if i throw seed out, will it hold over till the rain comes?

depends what you throw and how you sow it...if it is small seed just on the dirt, then probably not. if it is wheat or oats and you disk it in, then probably.

If you drill it in, it should be fine...

be careful what you wish for. These are strange times.

I'm In the same boat. I'm all ready to go just need some gosh damn rain. I think it's best to plant when there is 100% chance of rain in the next 24h.

we have planted in the dust many times then waited. several years back, I had my plots prepped by late Sept, forecast called for a good soaking middle of the week, went out and planted & lightly disc them in ... front fizzled out, no rain ... until mid December when the rains finally started coming, by mid January, the plots looked great as season came to a close!!!

Seed sitting in dry ground will remain viable for a very long time. The issue with throwing them out without rain in the forecast is how many seeds you lose to birds before the next rain.

I had a flock of a dozen turkeys clean darn near every wheat and oat seed off of a 1/2 acre plot over a two week period. I had a time lapse camera running dawn to dusk, so I knew exactly what happened. The dry ground looked as though someone had worked the entire plot over with a lawn rake.

BayouGuy that's exactly what happened to me, the black birds and turkey cleaned most of the seeds out in about a week.

My greatest plot failure was planting right before a rain into very dry ground. The rain came, but it was light. Just enough to germinate the seed but not enough to really increase soil moisture. The seed sprouted but with no more rain in two weeks the seedlings fried.

As of yesterday, I'm ready for the seed to go in. In my part of the state, I target September 18th every year because we typically have some type of tropical activity that meets the first frontal systems which deliver near a week's worth of light rain and cooler weather. With the atmosphere all goofed up from the Atlantic systems, I don't know exactly what will happen and I don't like the highs we have forecast. Even if moisture falls, I want cooler temperatures behind it or the weeds will overtake the seedlings.

Ranch dog, nice plot. Really like the way the packer has that flat and even. Really good looking dirt too. I am headed up to my place this weekend to till up some plots and will work on the no till experiment a little as well. Sprayed about a week and a half ago, looks like I have gotten a good kill so far. Just need some rain. It has been a dry month so far for us not on the coast.

Don't forget about the red ants! They love seed and will take all of it for the winter.

Thanks! This is the third year for this plot since I had it cleared with a dozer. I had it root plowed down to but not through the clay pan, which is about 9", then spent a lot of time with it. The enemy now is grass, but dealing with it is just part of the journey.

A packer is a neat tool, mine is a Brillon P-10 (Brillon refers to it as a pulverizer). Not only does it break up the soil finer than a disc with a tooth harrow, the packing prevents the soil from losing moisture which will be important for the next week to ten days. The packer has the extended tow bar which is pretty cool. It can be attached to the clevis hitch on the back of the disk with the tooth harrow between the two, under the tow bar. My Kubota doesn't have dual rear hydraulics like my Zetor did so the triple tow doesn't work. For tight turns, the packer needs to be raised slightly.
