When my grandfather pasted he left me a Remington 7400 in 30-06. I have a hunt and my first season with a lease ahead of me and need a deer rifle so I put a 2-7 leupold on it with peek through rings that is time period correct. What are your thoughts on that type set up? Not sure if I like the peep through or not. It will be tested prior to the season no doubt. I want this rifle to be period correct for when he bought it as it is sentimental to me. I know this is a 2moa gun but we will see what happens.

As a general rule, a scope should be as close to the barrel as possible in order the minimize the variation between the axis of the scope and trajectory of the bullet.

That is what I did for my target gun but this rifle is for 100 and in. 125-150 is a long shot.Do those rings have a place or no?

Shoot it. Get comfortable and go hunt.

There is no right or wrong here. Do what feels best. For me see through rings are an abomination and have no utility. For others they are the cat's meow. They cause more problems than they solve for most people.

There are plenty of solid rings that are period correct without resorting to those see-through rings. As booradley correctly pointed out, they're an abomination.

Old news that can be ignored.

Now days set the scope at the height that is most comfortable for the shooter, and that provides natural point of aim.

Josh,

Commit to irons or scope, not both.

I have one is 30-06 as well. Haven't shot it in years and took the cheap banner scope and see thru rings off.
Never mounted another scope on it. One thing I did learn is very slow twist 1:14 i think with a short barrel sucks for anything over 155 gr bullets. 2"+ groups is what i can get with 150gr bullets. Great looking gun but not very accurate.

I get the feeling that this won't be your 'go to' gun, just that you want to hunt with it in memory of your Grandfather. With that in mind, do what feels best for you. I think keeping it period correct is great. P_102

Exactly what I needed to hear gentleman. I was not too fond of them and granted they were the rings he utilized I think this slight refit would be fine by him.

Alright. Got the new leupold medium rings on and the 2-7x lupy scope. It is coming together and Earnie is working on the sling. That front sight on the 7400 is visible in the scope. Is this a non issue or should I pull this. I apologize for the newbie question but want to do this right. It does not really interfere with sight picture but is visible at the bottom 1/4 of the scope.

Seeing the front sight post is fine. It won't effect anything, other than being visible. I had a 1-4 scope on an AR where I could see the A2 front sight post also when on 1 or 2 power. It went away on 3x and 4x.

I have not tried higher power but that is good to hear. I really did not want to pull that.

Now you know why Gramps had the see thru mounts. Needed to raise that scope up a tad and he was practical man. Wasn't about to waste any money on high dollar mounts with high rings. Just the way some people were back years ago. Would't be surprised if he used Remington CoreLocks 150 gr.

He shot federal 150r soft points and they still have the sticker from gibsons. I will try and dig them out of the safe tomorrow lol. You just described my pawpaw to a T. Old Czech welder at lone star gas his entire career. Only reason I changed it is because a turret got broke on that stock banner 4x.

I agree that seeing the front post in the bottom of the scope isn't a problem. Cool deal outfitting your grandpa's old rifle.

I would get it as close to like he had it as I could and not worry about the rest of it. And shoot a deer with one of those Gibson's cartridges.

leave it alone, go sight it in , start at 50 yards or closer to get on paper then zero at 100 and enjoy the memories. I think you will be surprised at how good it shots.

get a bore snake clean the crap out of it. use some decent ammo, gramps would probably use some 150gr corelocks.

sounds like a great project, BTW you will LOVE Ernie's sling !!!!!

Range reports and pics are a MUST on this one.

Earnie is finishing up the tooling the sling so as soon as it comes in I will update this thread with the rifle pics. I am going to zero it with these federals and take it on a doe hunt in October at muliemikes place in Sonora. I will save what does not get shot just for sentimental reasons.

Thanks Jerm. It has been fun. I can't wait to see what Earnie did with the sling. Now to see how it shoots...
