I was thinking of converting my tripod corn feeders to ones that are right on the ground.

Here's the idea. Keep feeder unit mounted under barrel. Build a 2'x2'x2' cage under it. The cage frame would be made of angle iron. Then I would put cattle panels on it. There would be two cattle panels over each other where it would make the squares smaller. Maybe even use horse panels that have smaller holes already. That way I could get the holes to about 1.75"X1.75". To keep coons out. They could try to reach it but being 2' wide they couldn't reach the feeder unit. Then on bottom I'd have plate in a upside down v to keep corn from getting under it. It would be staked and tied down with cut t-posts. Wired tight.

Would it work? Issues?

I honestly do not see why it would not work . As long as it's throws corn and gets the corn to the ground you should be good .

Btw The feeder in the picture is a feeder from HB hunting products I would not exactly say it's homemade !

I bought two stands from a guy here on THF that makes feeders. Can't remember his name, someone here will help me, he just moved down to San Angelo I believe. The screen appears to be the same material as in the HB example you purchased. Coons aren't getting in.

I did add the corn shield at the bottom that keeps the corn from getting under the feeder. I think he offers that as an option now.

I will say you need to have everything else fully functioning already, for this to be cheaper than just buying say a new ASF Stand and Fill. I had pretty new timers, spinners, barrels, lids, etc., just needed the stand. I did swap my Eliminator plates for a generic plate to get a further throw, as I don't need the Eliminator function anymore. Given it is lower to the ground, you don't get quite the broadcast you might be getting with it 6+ feet in the air.

Leave your eliminator plate on. I have raccoons that can reach in from the top center and just get their fingers on it and spin it.

Yes it was me Charlie, the cage is 2"x4" horse panel or sometimes called kennel panel.

I just built 3 similar to the all seasons stand and fill's and used horse panel 2x4 squares
