Thinking about getting a 10/22 but there's tons of different models. Can any of you that are well versed in Ruger 10/22's advice me on the one that best meets my needs:
I won't be customizing it
I'll put a cheap scope on it (probably BSA Sweet .22)
Most accurate out of the box but with a shorter than 20" barrel
Prefer synthetic but if wood fits my scenario better than that's fine
The cheaper the better
Mostly plinking and letting my kid shoot it

Thanks!

I'd go with the heavy barrel. Put the bsa on my sons 10/22 and it's not a bad scope for it.

Thanks but that doesn't fit into my "< 20" bbl" and "the cheaper the better" preferences.

Go grab the academy special 200 throw a scope and rings you are out at 300. With that being said I found a heavy barrel for 269. They all shoot I just prefer the heavy barrel but I usually put mine together and go 16" barrel.

Agree on this scenario. Years from now, your kid can take it and trick it out any way he/she wants.

If you are ever going to get a suppressor, then opt for the "take down" model.

Any 10/22 you get will likely need a little work to shoot well. I would try to find an old one to work with. This is my oldest and favorite 10/22, made in 1969.

I have a basic 18-1/2" 10/22 and two 19" Marlin 60's. The 10/22 came from Academy about 2 years ago for $190.
The Marlins were $160. this last spring. Both cycle flawlessly, except that the Ruger doesn't like the BX-25 much.

One of each wears a 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner for $79. at Walmart. I like the old school Weaver "See Through" rings for close range shooting - you just shift your cheek to look under the scope, and go.

The Marlin groups a little better out at 75-100, but as long as I feed them the ammo that each one likes - they both shoot plenty tight.

Target quality rifles? Oh Heck no! A whole bunch of cheap fun for the kids and grandkids? Heck yes!

I think this is my favorite 10/.22 ever. You know I think I'm the only one in America who doesn't own one bang

Get the Ruger 10/22 model 1230. It's got a 16" heavy hammer forges barrel, Hogue Overmold stock, and bipod. Shoots lights
out.

Thanks Buzz! Here's the other side...

Old rifles like this had receivers that were high grade alloy and anodized very well. It's not painted, it almost looks blued. The barrel, bolt, receiver and trigger group are all original. The barrel and bolt went to Randy at CPC. The barrel has the original Lyman folding rear sight which we couldn't bear to remove, so Randy stepped up and designed the suppressor mount so it wouldn't interfere. I mounted the Leupy on QD mounts so I have BUIS too. Randy worked the bolt and chamber, I did the trigger work. It's my favorite 10/22, maybe my favorite rifle. It's extremely accurate, and since adding the Sparrow, it's not picky about ammo anymore.

Regular old carbine shoots as well as any of the light-profile models. Runs about $200 and is offered with synthetic stock also. Model 1151.

If I was getting one, I'd spend the extra to get a heavy barrel model if you're going to do any range shooting with a scope. But they're both fun.

I don't own one, so there's two of us. My Savage is more accurate than a 10/22 and I love shooting it. Though I wouldn't mind a 10/22 takedown.

Your Savage is not more accurate than a 10/22. I believe it is just as accurate though. I have several and they're all extremely accurate. The only 22lr I have that will do better is my Win52 and it is marginally better. That is semiauto vs bolt gun though. My Win52 is more accurate than a Savage.
