I know this topic has been done a bit before, but....... There is a great sale on an 18" Grendel barrel. Any reason why I shouldn't go for it? FYI, this is theoretically going to be my daughters' hunting rifle as they get a bit older AND I'm a bit of a speed snot, meaning I even have a 26" 308 because i like the added speed and don't care about the weight because it's only a range and fun gun. edit: speed snob, not snot here is deal i am eyeballing. http://www.primaryarms.com/odin-works-18...5-18-int-tg-bcg

Grendels like long barrels but for its intended usage you should be good.

18" is fine. (And I have a 28" barreled 308, and 29" 300 Win Mag!)

18 inch barrel is good to go for hunting with the Grendel.
Longer barrels will as you know give more speed but a 16 or 18 inch barrel is good for deer to 300 yards and beyond, nd makes for light handy gun (good for the kiddos)

Yup I hear 18" is fine! If you want to stretch it out some say 20" is a better minimum length.

IF me, for what I would be using the Grendel - to around 400 yds, an 18-20 would be MY Preferred length. Handling matters more than a few clicks on a scope, again, for me.

I doubt we will be hunting past a couple yards with this thing. In my mind when the girls grow up, this will be their primary rifle however I will always accompany them with my rifle should the need arise for a bigger caliber.
At this point, it's all hypothetical and just an excuse to buy things since my girls are 18 and 3 months old right now. For years it will be my paper and steel puncher.
Thanks for the input. I pulled the proverbial trigger on the purchase and now feel good about doing it.

I was in the same position and I went with a 20" medium profile barrel, it handles well and I don't regret it. I think the the extra 2" does make a difference in the case of Grendel.

I went 22" on the grendel. The extra few inches should give about 100-125 pts difference

Already bought and received the 18" barrel because it was one HECK of a deal. I may one day get a longer barrel but seems like it fits well so far.

I went 22" on the grendel. The extra few inches should give about 100-125 pts difference Which is meaningless in hunting. When I make my Grendel it will be 16". I keep thinking about a 12" SBR...maybe next year.
