So I've been working with the NRCS to get some land cleared and converted back to native pasture. The land has been cleared, and I need to prepare the seed bed before the NRCS will provide me with the seed. I called up TPWD and they have an 8' no till drill I can borrow but it requires rear remote hydraulics. If I used this I would need to rent a tractor at least 40hp with remote hydraulics, and I would need to shred the pasture. They also have a 4' tow behind drop seeder, but I would need to shred the pasture and disc it a couple times (don't have a disc) to prepare a better seed bed, but I could use the tractor I have already.

My question is which method would you chose? Has anyone rented a tractor before? Where and how much do they typically go for per day? Sunbelt has them for $275 a day with $110 each way for pickup and delivery. Seems crazy money to me! Any other suggestions?

What the cost to rent a disc to tow behind your tractor?

Compare cost of renting all the equipment you need vs hiring somebody to come out and do it.

or apply the rental/delivery cost towards a disc.

guess you don't have a trailer?

I rent stuff from zimmerer-kubota, they are good to work with, very easy, but a little far from you. Have several shops in the DFW area, but don't don't know if any are close enough for you to make it worth it.

Having said that, call around to the local tractor sales places, they may rent tractors and may deliver as well. I was told by the zimmerer folks they don't like renting anything more than a 25hp tractor to a half ton pickup, they need a 3.4 ton or larger to get 40hp or bigger.

^^This^^ if you are renting a 50 HP machine, with an implement, and a trailer, you will probably be at MAX+ tow on most 1/2 ton pickups. My guys in Brownwood ask in advance what you'll be using to tow so you don't show up only to be mad they won't let drive away overweight.

Not something I would want to do every day with one, but dang near any modern 40 hp tractor will go on just about any 16-foot tandem 3500 lb axle utility trailer, which is well within the capability of many if not most 1/2 ton pickups. Last time I rented equipment was ride on trencher that had a weight tag on it for 9300 dry on a 20-foot lowboy from the same place they didn't bat an eye at hooking it up to a 1/2 ton chevy... which didn't like the chore too much but did it without issue.

Get to know your neighbors, one or more will probably have a teenage son that could use the extra cash. A lot easier to have someone else that is local to get this stuff done than renting a strange piece of equipment and having to haul it back and forth.

Or check with the local school district's Ag teacher, he/she might know someone. He might even be willing to use the job as a teaching experience for his students.

redchevy, while I agree with you, I was just posting what the local tractor company told me. They would not rent me a tractor bigger than the 25hp for my f150 even with max towing package, didn't matter. You have to remember there are lots of idiots out there who will try to take that max loaded trailer and try to drive it crazy, or just don't know what they are doing. Company is just trying to protect their equipment. Don't blame them one bit.

Rarely ever see a small tractor with rear remotes that your going to need. Hire it done and save yourself a lot of trouble.

You can remove the hydraulic cylinder, hoses, and replace with a manual screw device that acts as cylinder. Available at TSC

Or hire it done by neighbors. ASC could tell you whom you might contract to do it.

I do have a trailer, but not gooseneck. Seems most places won't let you tow without gooseneck.

Thought about buying a disc. Need one anyway, but I would rather use the no till drill. Less time, and better seed placement.

You might want to put an ad in the classified, there might be someone on THF that has a place near you that could do the job for you.

If you cant hire it out, me personally, I would buy a disc (you say you need), cross disc the field, broadcast the seed, then drag.
Native seed should be more resilient and generally falls on top any way, too deep and it may sit there for years. You end up with a disc, so not a total loss on that cash, field should be a better bed than native grass gets in general and you may save a few bucks. The seed alone is not cheap if you're buying it, depending on he native mix, so that is a nice savings.

BTW, I only have a 35hp Kioti now and it has remotes, not sure if the pump would be sized well for an 8' drill though. You may find a rental close that can handle it at 35+hp though. Also, every time I have had to rent a tractor, I also had the option to rent a trailer from the same place, usually around $20-30 extra.

TPWD requires 40+ hp for the tractor to use the drill. I was told that they can set it up for each seed type to the necessary seeding depth, so it will likely have a better turn out then just spreading. It would also save me the time of discing the field twice (12 acres). That is the method I'm leaning towards, but will likely pick up a disc anyway for food plots. Seems like you can get them for a reasonable cost used on Craigslist.

Yeah, most small pumps arent going to run that and above 40 is probably a better guarantee.

Dont know where you need it, but have been quoted before, anywhere from 30 to 50 per hour for tractor and operator.

Found some on craigslist. Sometimes just talking to people in the area...

Local feed store is usually a great place to find someone for hire, that or a local co-op if you have one.

You will probably have to talk to one of the hands there vs a secretary, the guys that deliver product and load trucks know everybody
