Which barrel do y'all shoot first and what are your choke configurations for dove hunting?

Pops uses modified on top and improved modified on bottom. Shoots top then bottom. YMMV and we are just country boys when it comes to that game.

I wish I had an improved mod choke.

I was being serious. The only tubes I have are imp cyl, mod and full. I need to order a light mod and improved mod.

I shoot bottom first, it should cause less jump that way.

Chokes are up to you and where you hunt. But mine is tighter choke for second shot as it's usually further.

That makes sense. Thanks for that info.

My gun shoots bottom barrel first. It has an IC in it. Top barrel is a modified. I can switch it by pushing the trigger forward and it will shoot top first and it resets to bottom first when reloaded. If I know it's going to be long range all day, I will switch to a mod and full.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Depends on what I'm hunting as far as chokes but I always shoot bottom/top. Bobwhites it's skeet/skeet to skeet/mod if Blues are in the Area. Dove around a pond it's imp/mod, in the field it's mod/mod. All might be changed once I see the situation.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Most (that I know of) O/U shooters shoot bottom barrel first for the reason stated above, including me, but I've never seen any scientific data to show that it's true. I haven't had anything tighter than IMP screwed in any of my guns in over 30 years, (except a couple 'long range' clay challenges which I suck at)....IMP is plenty to bring down dove at up to about 35 yards and sometimes further. Where I normally hunt, over a tiny water hole not much bigger than a walk-in closet, I use the most open chokes I have for the gun I'm shooting, in my 28 it's SK and SK, CYL in my 20 semi. There are plenty of charts available on the net, Briley used to have some good ones and is also a great place for Jeremy to get the chokes he needs. P_102

I too mainly use Sk/Sk in my 28 for doves.
It's been years since I have shot a 12 at doves but when I shoot crows I use a light mod in a semi with number 7 shot and it works.

That would be Light Modified, usually a special order choke but used allot with Sporting Clays shooters on longer distance shots.

BTW, Jeremy, Briley offers chokes LM and IM as standard constrictions. I would highly recommend one in SK also. P_102

Thanks for all the info, fellas. I'll be shooting at crossing whitewings so I'll probably use 2 mod chokes or mod and full. It's windy as hell in Wichita Falls and the birds fly high and fast.

Mine is M over IC, fixed chokes and fire the bottom first.

That should be fine, Jeremy. You might stick an IC in your pocket for a quick change if needed.
Google 'briley sporting clays chart' and compare target profiles to what the bird profiles would be.

I've always shot bottom first for less jump and better heat dissipation.

if I were not getting rid of my O/U'S (never been shot) I would have to test the theory of bottom first, imo, its not a factor, have owned many O/U'S
