Got my deer opening day last season. Decided to take it to the local taxi near our lease instead of me and my families usual guy in DFW.

Don't know much about his work, was trying to support a local business, but I've called a few times, and haven't received much clarity, at all, on a time frame.

any of y'all have some insight on "how long is too long" before I should be concerned?

Depends on time that is spent working on it... full time taxidermist or just something to on the side?
I've heard stories of up to 18 months!!

Might be worth a little road trip to go visit?

Typically for a taxi that's really good and therefore has plenty of work about 10-12 months IME.

For you having shot it opening day last year, I'd be getting a bit worried. Yours should have been in line, in front of most the others that were received through out the season.

In my experience, a deer killed around the first week of opening, id expect 3-6 months. Later in the season, I wouldn't be shocked to receive a year later. I've read stories on here of taking 2 years though. If it's the guys full time job, I would think he would try to cycle all deer from last year out before start of this season.

Very few taxi's around here and the good ones are sloooooooooow. Great work but very slow. My average is well over a year. Our last deer was 1.5 yrs. A good taxidermist with quality work and turn around could make a killing in the Lubbock area.

Guy I had in CA started out with a six month turn around. He was working in his garage and had just started doing it full time after getting laid off from his plumbing job. Over the years, that wait increased. He was the very best in the area, and by the time I moved away, it was a two year wait. When you dropped off your animal, he wrote it up and gave you a copy. His copy went to the bottom of his stack. That stack was several inches thick!!!.

Guy I use here in the Tyler area is about 3 to 4 months. He is still fairly new, but his wait time does seem to be increasing. First animal he did for me two years ago was done very quickly. Now I'm waiting a bit longer.

Mine have typically taken 8-9 months, but I know of several folks that wait 12-18 months for theirs.
