I'm going on my first axis hunt in late Sept, can't hardly wait! I've heard that the vitals are more forward on a axis vs a wt. Does anyone have a picture showing the vitals? Oh by the way, I'll be using a 300 WSM.

Is this a joke? You can hit an axis anywhere in the chest cavity with a 300 and you'll be fine. They aren't tough to take down.

Super excited for you, they are my favorite deer to hunt. With axis, they are tough animals and built like tanks. I'd punch him right dead in the shoulder as their vitals are a little more forward than wt and you want to take his wheels out. Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

They are not tough animals. Shoot them just like a whitetail and you'll be fine. If you shoot them forward you take out the shoulder and ruin all that meat.

The vitals are farther forward than a whitetail. This doesn't make them "tougher" than a whitetail, it just means the vitals are located lower and farther forward. Their bone structure isnt larger than most of our whitetail deer in Texas, but they can be a heavier animal. If you hit one behind the shoulder with that caliber of rifle or even a smaller caliber like a .243 Win you should be fine. Personally I prefer the larger that you stated. I would recommend holding tight to the crease behind the shoulder and 1/3 of the way up from bottom of the chest and you should be good.

I aim the same as whitetail and never had an axis take more than 20 steps after the shot

Beware that field dressing and skinning is much harder than whitetail and the smell can be a little rough lol tons of meat though! And beautiful hides. Place in Denton does the hide cheap but takes a long time. Turning mine into a chair back

Good luck. You should do fine with that caliber.

Never a stupid question! But, I always like reading the opinions. I shoot them standing broadside in the eye with a 22 Mag FMJ. It passes straight thru and blinds them. Make a lot of racket and they'll run straight to you. Baseball bat to the head and the only waste might be the brain depending on the power of your stroke ... LOL. Sorry, just bored tonite and not a sip to drink. Just enjoy your time out in God's creation. Make your shot and let the guide do the real work! Best wishes!
