OK, here comes the dummy with the stupid questions again. We have set up a hog and Javelins hunt in the Permian Basin for new years weekend. Question is do we need tags? If so Where do we get them?

I know that they are considered game and must be kept in editable condition, but how much must you keep? Back strap and???? confused2 confused2 confused2

Thank You
Robert

LOL, they are as much of a rodent as deer or cattle are. They are cloven hooved mammals just like deer, cattle, hogs, goats, bison, etc.

I haven't yet been hungry enough to eat a javelina. How they got to be a game animal is a mystery to me.

I have heard they are nasty, but as a game animal they must be kept in editable condition. Just wondering if that definition is the same as deer / Pronghorn?

My son is 14 and has a chance to hunt a ranch owned by family. It is javelina season, they want them gone, he wants to shoot one. Hunt is free except getting there. Sounds like a win win win.... Just want to make sure we are legal.

Thank You

Some people claim they are good eating and others say they taste really nasty. Maybe some difference between sows and boars or something like that. I have no idea why they should be a regulated game animal...but I am at a loss to figure out a lot of stuff the Park and Wildlife outfit comes up with.

I have shot many of them. They taste like stewed skunk piss and a monkeys anus. Yeah enjoy.

First time/only time javelina hunting was spring this year. Shot two and turned both into sausage/Kabalsa. Everyone has liked it that's tried it

They actually don't taste bad less gamey taste than some deer I've had. DO NOT POP THE SCENT GLAND when skinning and the meat tastes about like pork. They're stinky suckers, especially the males.

You don't need a "tag" but you will need a license and as mentioned before only 2 per yr.

You are correct, BUT they stink like-well the mods wouldn't allow that language here. My SIL and I tagged one apiece on a TPWD hunt. We carried it home and ate most of it, but some was just to STANKY. There is a musk gland on the back that needs to be removed, but DO NOT cut into it. sick
