what is the "logical" explanation if there is one on why the pintail limit was dropped to one? overall duck numbers are down a touch, but pintails and a few others are up. pintails 10% since last year. can't figure this out on why they pretty much dropped the limit before they even knew what kind of hatch they would have this year

Because they have been on the decline the previous couple years I think.

It's my understanding that it was dropped as the LTA (long term average) is still something like 25% lower than what it should be. Thus, reducing to 1 in the bag limit should allow the population growth to what it needs to be long term.

if that is the case, why couldn't the limit be 2 or 3 and make it drakes only? If you can require people to distinguish between mallard hens and drakes, surely you could distinguish between white and brown ducks.

I can live with it. Years ago we had a point system. Ducks were assigned points, once you reached 100 points you were done for the day. Canvasbacks were 100 points female mallards were 90. Point were assigned by population numbers. The Canvasbacks and mallards both made comebacks. Same thing can happen with the pintails.

During those same point system days in the mid 1970's Pintails were 10 points. You could shoot 10 sprigs.

When the spring Pintail count is over 2.7 million we get a limit of 2 per day the following year. Below 2.7 million the limit is 1 per day. This year count does not effect this years season dates and limits. This years count effects next years season. All the information is here. https://flyways.us/sites/default/files/uploads/2017_ahm_report.pdf Page 27 for Pintails.

so theoretically the limit should be back at 2 next year? I do not fully understand how they come up with the bag limits still. We can harvest 2 pintails when the population reaches 2.7 million, but can harvest 2 canvasbacks when the population is at seven hundred and some odd thousand. And we can take three woodducks and nobody really even has any close guesstimate as to how many of those there are. has anyone done any studies on drake only harvest? I don't know the ratio, but from doing a lot of duck watching and hunting, there are far more pintail drakes than hens.

Haven't researched it much but times of drought and floods in the nesting habitat may have something to do with it too.

From Ramsey Russell at Getducks

"The bag limit on Pintails will be 1 during the upcoming season and it's probably because they're shooting too many in Mexico, right? Nope. That's pure politics. What about the daily limits in Alaska (8 daily) and Canada (4 daily)? Only anti-hunters myths that hunting-related harvests destroy wildlife. We hunters know better. The continued decline of North America's pintail population is due to the agricultural practice known as no-till farming, which is very good for conserving soil but very bad for pintails. Per the following Wildlife Bulletin article (1999): "The steady conversion of grasslands to cultivation in the western Canadian Prairie Pothole Region since the 1950s and 1970s has markedly reduced the extent of safe upland nesting habitat, thereby reducing pintail productivity to levels below the threshold needed to maintain populations. Grain stubble attracts large numbers of pintails to nest in the early spring, and cultivation (of the present-year's crop over last year's residual cover) destroys virtually all nests. Additionally, Research in the 80s showed how nest success of prairie ducks, even those that don’t nest in cropland, declined as the proportion of cropland increased in the landscape because suitable nest sites in scattered grasslands and planted cover were rare and predators more efficient. Most wetlands in the PPR have been impacted by agriculture and more than 85% of the region has been cultivated (Millar 1989)." Ask Ramsey if the Brant populations aren't affected by over hunting in Mexico.......

Guys that make money exploiting the resources we all share aren't high on my list of people to pull facts from.

Flying South and shooting as many ducks as you can for a picture sure doesn't help populations.
