I am interested in the old S&W topbreak models in 32 S&W but it seems no sells 32-44 anymore. I am still trying to confirm but doubt you can use 32 short or long as substitute ammo. Anyone know of an easy parent cartridge to form that's readily avaiable? Maybe 32-20 or 32 H&R mag??

Looking forward to some input from mTHFers.

LOL!

You CAN edit, ya know. I know it can be difficult with a phone, though, being equipped with Autocorrupt and all.

Need to clarify exactly what you've got. There are some obscure old cartridges out there, but I do not believe there was ever a .32-44. I don't know the old S&W breaktops, but I expect they're chambered in .32 S&W.

So my investigation is slow going. The model 3 in 32 S&W is talked about on the S&W forum as not the same as 32 short. Albeit Wikipedia (which I don't trust) says they are one and the same. Those guys are talking about making brass for a 32-44 gallery round from 25-20 and 32-20. At this point I'm cornfused and need some direction. For clarification I don't have the gun bought.

From the interwebs:

.32 S&W—sometimes called .32 Short[20]
.32 S&W Long—sometimes called .32 Colt New Police (a variation produced for the Colt New Police Revolver, as Colt did not want an association with their competitor)[20]
.32-44 S&W, defined as .32 Caliber (true .32 caliber measures .323", sole use in Model 3 Revolver to 1898.[21]

I suppose I just need to verify pistol age or what current owner shoots in it. Just don't what something I can't enjoy.

It could be something like what they called the .38-44, which you probably know was actually a S&W revolver built on the N frame in .38 Special. Gotta be careful about taking stuff off the net for truth---which I'm sure you also know. The darned web can tell you wverytjing that's true, but unfortunately everything that is not true also.

I found nothing in Cartridges of the World on .32-44.

I think I have it now. I was looking at a .32 S&W which is a short. Found out also that a .38 S&W is very old and nothing like .38 spec. Both were late 1800 black powder and popular in top break models. Not to be confused with a Schofield top break or others like it in .44 Russian.

Thanks

Starline makes brass for all the varieties of 32 brass. The 32-44 S&W is referred to the 32 S&W. The 32 S&W Long is .020" longer with higher pressures. I can load both, but need to know specifically which round you need. I have loaded some for some older pistols to shoot the original 32-44 S&W, or 32 S&W. The 32 S&W Long and 32 Colt are NOT to be used in the original 32 S&W chambers. The 32 S&W Long and 32 Colt can both be fired out of either chambered handgun.

I did find this on Starline's website:

The load was usually a 98 grain bullet at 700-750 FPS giving it up to 130 FT LBS. of energy. It was considered the minimum powered round for police work. In fact, some police forces issued them for patrol work. It was also discovered by ISU competition shooters. As a quality gun, the accuracy has always been quite good. With its accuracy and light recoil, it became popular for target and competition shooting, as well as small game hunting. I have found that semi and wad cutters are accurate in the .32’s that I have shot. There was also an obscure round known as the .32/44, which was chambered in the S & W No. 3 revolvers. It uses a longer case and will not chamber in the long. Here are a few loads for the short & long.

There is also mention of the .32-44 on wikipedia:
