So, here is my first attempt at taking video of a hunt through my thermal. I quickly realized it is not as simple to record quality footage as one would think. The scope was a little out of focus for these shots, there was a double feed stoppage, and for some reason it didn't record any audio, but not a deal breaker.

Please bear with me on this one as it has not been edited at all and there are some shaky areas, plus a double feed issue that is addressed.

Two good size boars are killed in this video, but it's really the second one that is the best part (2:30). First boar takes 4 shots and hits the tree line to die (See pic). The second boar is an acrobat and has a few moves up his sleeve.

Made me nauseous getting there, but your shot was well worth the ride! smile I haven't had a somersault like that yet.

While it's very basic, youtube does have some basic editing features you can use to cut out the setup. Great shot, he almost came an sat in your lap.

Rob M, welcome to the world of videoing your hunts. I think you will find that it will really have an impact on our hunting and how you think about hunting as you learn to work with video. I got into video, initially, to learn more about what I was doing, both right and wrong, in the field. Video can show your great shots, you trigger jerks, aiming off target, etc. It can be very revealing and sometimes just plain embarrassing. blush

What I saw when I looked at your video was simply the reality of what happens in the field, but that isn't always what looks good. I have a lot of video that has the same sorts of quick, jerky panning. It is hard to remember when you are on hogs and the adrenaline is dumping that while you can assess a sounder just as you did with quick movements that it doesn't make for good video and you will learn to slow down your panning.

Don't sweat the raw video quality right now and don't get discouraged. You warned us and that is just the reality of hunt videography. Things will improve with time.

CONGRATS ON THE HOGS!!!!!

Thanks, Deadend, but really the opposite is often the case. A good production often is NOT easy, or at least not quick, LOL.

I guess my title was a little misleading. I've been hunting with my thermal for a couple weeks now, and have been absolutely hammering the hogs, so these weren't my first kills with it, just the first ones I have videoed. I actually killed 6 last night, but only felt the flip was worthy of a post.

It was quite a challenge to remember that the DVR was on and not to be jerky or pan quickly. The reality is that when you bust a group you're trying to drop as many as possible, so it's easy to forget about the filming aspect. I will definitely be more aware on my next hunt though, and should have another video up sometime Saturday.

Double Naught Spy, thanks for the advice. We all enjoy the quality of your videos!

Best somersault by a pig I've ever seen.

I too really enjoyed that porky pig cartwheel. I was wondering how close you were going to let get before you killed him. One thing I would recommend is switching to bipod/tripod vs. a shooting stick. Having that extra support to stabilize will make a big difference.

What scope are you using?

I have a tripod trigger stick at the lease. I left it there like an idiot, so I have been making due with the monopod.

The scope is a Pulsar Apex XQ38. I was a little out of focus in the video. The image quality is much better than what is shown.

You'll be a pro in no time. Nice somersault. Gotta love that thermal.

One shot is all it should take.
