Placed two baits out last week when I went to my parents place in MN. Bought my bait and my father is helping me by checking cameras and putting bait out daily now until I get there to hunt on Sept 1st. Just thought I'd share a few pics so far...

Good luck and can't wait for pics and the story! I am looking at taking my father up there for a moose hunt when I retire from the AF in a years time. Who are you going with for an out fitter?

That one looks like a bruiser!! Best of luck! As far as moose goes in Ontario - our moose numbers are in decline and are headed for the same situation you guys have in Minnesota. If I was going to pay an outfitter for a moose hunt I don't think it would be Ontario and I live here! My first choice would be Newfoundland.

Thanks for the advice! I'll post new pics and details when I get them from dad and continue when I'm on stand to follow along if people would like. I can't wait! Haven't shot one in about 10 years

We are headed to Merckle's camp with Terry Kluke for week of fishing/bear at his outpost cabin. I know the fishing is good and we will see bears. Hope to see a bruiser like your pic.

Wabigoon/Dinorwic lakes are a great part of the province. Excellent fishing for walleye, pike, muskie and smallmouth bass. Bear density is the highest in the province and bear size is larger than average with potential for some real monsters. Good luck!

That looks like a nice bear. What part of Minnesota are you hunting in?

My wife is from Morrison County.

My wife's family is from the Upsala area,. I was all set to settle in Texas when I was stationed at Ft Hood, then met my wife, now I'm in MN.

I'm guessing your hunting just north of St Croix State Park. Upsala is in Morrison County which might be of intrest to Pitchfork.

No bear hunting in the park they have a four day deer season with 350 permits. A line from the southern boundary of the park west to hwy 10 then northwest along 10 is a good rough approximation of bear country.

Went to check/refresh my baits Saturday. I always approach my baits quietly with the wind to my advantage and also go middle of the day so as to minimize the chances of disturbing feeding yogis. Well my first bait had been totally hammered with 350lbs of bait gone in 6 days. I stood the shaker barrel back up and put it in position for refilling and than hiked back out to my truck to begin the long job of humping the bait back in 90lbs per trip. Well I get back to the barrel and it has moved 8 feet to the end of it's chain and is back in the position I found 30 minutes earlier. Additional during that 30 minutes the tree I had my call lure in had been pulled down and had a claw mark next to the rag and a small bite out the rag.

So I backed out and decided to return today. I was able to re-bait and relocate the call lure without interference this time. I also put up a cam to hopefully see what's going on. I stopped using cams a few years back as the bears in my area consistently destroy them even when they are in steel lock boxes. Hopefully this one lasts long enough to see what is going on.

The second bait that i checked on Saturday was also fun as I walked in on a 200lb yogi happily feeding at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I was able to escape undetected without disturbing him as I came with minimal noise and the wind in my face. Went back on Sunday and got the bait freshened up. That site had about 25lbs left out 350lbs placed 6 days earlier.

Call lure with claw mark to the left and small bite out of the rag:

Tree the call lure was in:

Hopefully that big bugger shows up with enough light. He seems to like that time right around sunset and looks to be 50/50 odds of having enough light.

Good luck! When does your season open? Mine opens Sep 5th through until Nov 30th. We also get 2 tags if you are so inclined in my unit.
