Hey guys I may be relocating to the Freeport area and wondering about the duck hunting there. I'm a lifelong hunter but not a duck hunter and don't know anything about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Do you have a boat? And you plan on hunting the coast I assume? I would seek some recommendations for a good guide in Freeport area, let them take you out, show the ropes to duck hunting public. Be sure to bring a GPS so you can mark the duck hunting spots. grin

Talk to the local game warden to figure out where is legal/illegal to hunt on the bay/marsh. Also, there are several National Wildlife Refuges and State managed WMAs in that area. Each area may have different rules, so look them up for each area.

TPWD website has plenty of information on the WMAs.

Good luck!

I go kayak fishing on Christmas & Drum Bay often (which is 5 mins from Freeport).
During the duck season, I've seen duck hunters line up the shorelines that face north in the mornings.

There's other spots around and have seen hunters use kayaks to get to them.
Which makes sense, since the water depth can be as shallow as 6" during winter low tides. You'll get stuck on a boat.

Much of the marsh area are legal public hunting grounds.
But like RiverRunner says, check with TPWD to be sure.

There aren't any ducks down here. Just a bunch of coots and grackles.

I would have to also add:

Each time I went there during duck season, I would maybe hear 4-5 shots go off in a 4 hour span (6 AM to 10 AM).

Lots of oyster shell banks in those bays down there. Don't take a dog until you know exactly where to and not to go.
