I pulled out an old bottle today that I had found 38 years ago. I was scuba diving with my Dad at Port Aransas. We had carried our gear far out on the east Jetty that runs out from the end of the beach. We put in the pass at slack tide. Original plan was to just dive off the rocks, but we had timed the tide change wrong. When the tide shifted we dropped deeper and went with it. Each of us flying across the bottom like superman we covered a great distance of the pass going inshore I know past were the A&M pier is today. We held ends of a short rope to stay with each other. We were flying across the bottom with the current at 60 ft depth when I spotted this bottle. Unable to stop, I snatched it and stuffed it in my BC pocket. With my Dad now gone it has great sentimental meaning to me. The glass is full of waves and air bubbles. Not pictured on the other side it has NEW YORK embossed on it. Anyone with knowledge of these old Bottles or anyone who can date the possible age, do please let me know.

That is a neat find. Austin, Nichols and Co had a wholesale food business in NY more than a hundred years ago. After the repeal of the Volstead Act, they went into the whiskey business and currently make Wild Turkey as well as several other brands.

We have some old bottles, but none have the story you have. Nice find.

That is about as good a find, as it gets. Great story too. Always enjoy your stories and hunts, John.

Dang, that's cool! I didn't even know you could dive there? I'd like to learn how and metal detect while diving. And there's a ton of stuff about bottles on the web. Lots of people collect them. I've got quite a few I've dug up over the years, running a backhoe. I started researching them a long time ago, but lost interest....or actually, time to do it. I checked ebay. There's some from the early 1900's and going anywhere from 8-20 dollars. But the ones bringing money are spotless, too. That's one thing I haven't figured out how to do. They say sand works good, inside them

Great story. Here's something interesting about the company.
Austin, Nichols & Co. were a grocery wholesaler in New York City who had started to focus primarily on wine and liquor sales by the 1930s. They had product distilled under contract for them, and came up with the Wild Turkey brand in 1940 to appeal to hunters and have a generally rustic appeal. The legend is that a higher-up would bring his best stuff turkey hunting with his buddies, and they started asking for “some of that wild turkey whiskey.”

Glad to see that I am not the only one that keeps old things like that. Cool find.

Dang, that's cool! I didn't even know you could dive there? I'd like to learn how and metal detect while diving. ........ I would have to find my log books to find the actual date, but realize this dive was late 1970s. Both the location and diving in general was very different then. I would have no idea what is "allowed" there. It was a very dangerous dive then and would be more so today even if allowed. Getting back into metal detecting in the last year, after not doing it in almost as many years ago as that dive was, is what made me think of that bottle again. I have an AT Pro and it is supposed to be waterproof to 10 ft, but I have not had the courage to take it into or under water yet. And though I am slowly updating my scuba gear a little at a time, I have not been scuba diving in years.

It's still ticking, lol. You just have to check your connections good and keep them greased. And it helps, me, to swing a smaller coil underwater. I was nervous about dunking mine the first time, too. The only thing I don't like about that detector, is I can't see the screen with sunglasses on. But I usually sweat so much I ca'nt wear them anyway.
