Just got a tikka and thinking about cutting it down to 18 or 20. I just plan on hunting with it out to 300 and possibly 400 yards. I will use my silencer on it.

What length should I go with?

I'm at 20" +10" suppressor.

168 gr A-Max is 2645 fps MV.

What won't that kill?

Had my 7mm-08 cut to 16.25" and I love it! It's a Tikka as well.

With the 8" suppressor it is very easy to handle.

I was between 16" and 18" for awhile. But I had an 18".243 so I wanted to try a 16" rifle. I'm glad I did because with the suppressor I think it is easier to handle and easier in the deer blind.

My 7mm-08 maxes out at 400 for deer. My typical shot is 150-250 yards so the trade off of velocity for rifle handling is well worth it to me.

I have no doubt it'll do exactly what you need it to do.

I've got a 16 1/4" 7mm-08 A.I. in the works. I'll be trying 150 gr ELD-X, to gain speed due to such a short barrel. I will also try the 162 gr ELD-X, both on a 1:9" twist. I know both will shot well, the decision of what bullet to commit to will be determined by MV and corresponding ft/lbs.

I wrestled back and forth between 18 and 20" on my current 7-08 build. I wanted something shorter, as it will be suppressed full time. I'll be running 162 gr ELD's, and I ended up going 20" to hang on to as much velocity as I could. For the ranges you mentioned, it shouldn't make a bit of difference. The shorter, the handier when adding a suppressor. Especially for maneuverability out of a blind.

My T3's still at the original 22" length.

Things die in front of it. Quickly.

Thanks for talking me into it, JG. cheers

This is fairly on topic - I've heard shortening the barrel makes it stiffer and can improve short-range accuracy. Is that true? Say a 20" vs 24" 308, 7-08, 6.5CM, etc.

I think Chad said he cut his son's Tikka 223 Varmint to 17" IIRC. Would be a handy gun for sure.

If i go with a shorter barrel what would be the best bullet for deer and possibly hogs?

I am thinking about hornady 139sst, 139 gmx or 150 eld x

I went with a 20" barrel on my AR-10. Absolutely eats Nosler 140g accubonds. Heck of an all around bullet combo.
