Some of you probably know that I am hobbling around after knee replacement and my daughter is laid up after getting rear-ended by a truck. Things are sorta in a mess but my hunters are coming to the rescue. Two of the guys drove 350 miles round trip Sunday to offload 2500 pounds of Antlermax into seven of the feeders that were empty. Another group is coming this weekend to finish work on the new feeding pens. I just ran out of time and didn't get the stations finished. I have often read stories on the forum regarding problems between hunters and landowners. Each time I read stories, I tell myself that is not the person I want to be. I guess it worked.

agree, that's the way I was raised ... make it better than it was before you got there, helping the LO out when needed in whatever way is needed.

We don't lease any more, but our last deer lease was great. We hunting the property for over 20 years every opening weekend we would have a fish fry with the owner and while it was being cooked I would unload a gooseneck with a couple pallets of livestock feed and molasses tubs. Wasn't uncommon for the owner to call in the summer and my brother and I to go help fix fence or put flood gaps back if we had big rains. They took good care of us and I like to think we did the same for them.

That's just good people all the way around... to many expect to much without giving any back.. these hunters doing something without hesitation of a payback and just the satisfaction of knowing they did a good thing.. that's good people.. and they show this to you as respect because credit was due

Sounds like you are the kind of land owner that everyone hopes to find someday. You've do good by them and they do good by you.

I've gotten bit twice in a row by folks that could learn from you aeb. I consider a lease an investment that may not start to pay off for several years...there has got to be a two-way trust for it to work out in the long run and for everyone to be happy.

We did the same things for our landowner for 15 years. Built an inside shower in the cabin, brought in a new stove, frig, etc., helped around the place and helped with the stock. My FIL even gave the son's daughters a couple custom rifles. The landowner died, the son inherited it, and tripled the price on us. So there.

On the plus side you had 15 years of a very good relationship. Too bad things sometimes change negatively when the heirs get control of property.

Great story, OP.

Re: the above post, a 15 year relationship is a good run in pretty much any context.

Can't expect the next generation to not have their own thoughts or ideas about the property.

The other side of the coin. No way to know even after years of good relations.

AEB, that's how things should work, good relationship and good people helping each other out.

JoeBass, yep been there/done that with long term lease relationships (15 years and another place 7 year and last time group had lease 23 years) and poof it was different when heirs took over and either sold, way over priced, brought in friends or just quit leasing. Good runs though.

My land owner ended up being one of my best friends. Stood at my wedding. John developed prostate cancer and could not survive the treatment. Not a day goes by I don't miss him. His son also took over but just wasn't the same. We had some good times.
