Give him another year and he may reach 140 but I think right now he will fall just short of 130

You have his age right, if you could give him a year or two he could really jump

The spread is killing him! He is hitting all around that 130 mark though.

We'll roll the dice and let him walk. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he survives the season. We just don't have the luxury of letting bucks age to 6.5-7.5 before harvesting.

It is a tuff thing to do. We have a similar sized property and end up letting a few deer we have watched for 3-4 years go and never see them again, but sometimes they stick around or make it back.

If you like him take him. Not all bucks will continue to get bigger with age. In fact the area I hunt most bucks seem to grow very little from year to year after age 4. We have one buck on our place that I believe will be 13 or 14 this year. He had his best rack at age 4 and age 11 I think. Been a wide 8 all his life and nothing more. Have had several other bucks on our place in the 7+ year old class that never got much better after 4 years old either. Not all areas of the state will grow giant bucks just because they get older. I know the area I hunt sure as heck doesn't. There are always exceptions to the rule but the truth is bucks in certain areas of the state will only get so big regardless of age.

I'm sure I just opened a can of worms but this is the internet and we are all experts in deer management so there! scared

I'm curious, is it because you are hunting a small property?

The reason I ask is I hunted the area of Texas you hunt in for several years on about 6000 acres. Of course drought will kill them off early if you don't have water but aside from that, our deer had no problem reaching 6.5.

Small acreage and neighbors that hunt (not if it's brown, it's down types, but the kind that probably aren't going to pass on a solid 4.5 year old approaching 130).

Yeah I'm betting 6000 acres has a lot to do with easily getting deer to 6.5 YO.

It is very difficult to manage for age if you don't have enough acreage to manage the core area the bucks live in no doubt.

We had a lease that was only 1000 acres that had heavy pressure on all sides. But it was just enough land to keep most of the bucks living on it so our management worked very well for that lease. Of course we never killed more than 3 mature bucks a year and most years 2 with five hunters hunting the property. Throckmorton county.

Our group had reached a point in our hunting experience where we decided that we just didn't get a thrill from killing 4 year old bucks any more, even knowing that if we didn't the neighbors would.

Measure him with a bungee cord and he might make 150.

I agree and from that one pic I would call him mature looking at the way he stands on his hooves and his white socks. Neck hinges at the top of his back and a well defined brisket on him.

I looked twice. 131 the first time, 125 the second time when I looked a little harder. 1's & 4's are weak and mass is a crapshoot till they lose the velvet. He is close. Beams are gonna be on the short side. Aging now is tough unless you have past history. My gut says 3.5 but he may be 4.5. Is my SWAG

As tall and square as he is, On a cold frosty morning he will look like 140 when he comes crashing in chasing a doe.

Good looking deer

chef Either way, should be some great sausage. grill

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.
