Guys,

I'm looking for the pros and cons of each...

Which would you buy? Are their any circumstances where you would use both for the same rifle?

Thanks,

Mel

I use the Hornady because I don't like the performance of Bergers on game. Bergers would be hard to beat for competition, though.

Same as above. Bergers shoot super accurate out of everything I've tried but they're terrible on game. With the exception of 52 grain varmints out of a 22-250. They explode coyotes.

I could go into a LONG description on each bullet on what it does. The main question is, what do YOU want your bullet to do once it hits the animal? Or are you looking for a target bullet? What's the primary use?

Mel, we need more info, what caliber, what rifle, what game, what range??

I shoot the 140VLD and have NEVER lost or even had to track an animal I shot with it.

ELD (What)??? M or X ? Match or Hunting?

I am in the process of testing the ELD-X, so I cant comment but the VLD is deadly, so far but anything can happen with any bullet.

no really solid answers, just opinions, mine would be try both and shoot.

As others have said, what's the job of the bullet?

No matter what, the ELD line is less seating depth sensitive than Berger VLD. And the BC on the ELD bullets is great! All but one of my rifles are loaded with Hornady bullets. The 7 Rem Mag is the only one loaded with a 180 gr VLD-H. And everything it has hit, has died very quickly. As it should, I've got that big ole bullet scooting! wink

I've never used Berger bullets so I can only comment on the ELD-X . I shoot the 143 grain ELD -X out of my 6.5x 47 and have shot everything from coyotes to deer to precision rifle matches and all I can say is it performs very well.

It's primarily for hunting...so if for hunting then you would go with the ELD...

I'm considering trying to work up loads for my 7mag and my 300mag.

You'd want the ELD-X for hunting. I've used it since they came out in my Creedmoor....Elk, Oryx, Fallow, WT, pigs have all died quickly and efficiently.

The 200gr ELD-X in the 300 Win mag performed well this past season on several 400-750 yard shots on Bull Elk taken by friends and family.

Shot placement will be the factor........when using berger hunting bullets try to hit dense bone. Eld-x expands easier than the berger.

I'm not scared to shoot either one........I use berger elite hunters in a 175gr .284win and ELDx 143gr in my sons 6.5CM both are deadly. I try to shoot mid to high shoulder and my son, well it'll be in the shoulder or slightly behind depending on his nerves. Off topic my younger son is shooting a AR 223 barnesX 62gr and it'll surprise you how much damage it'll do.

No, that's not always how it works.

ElDs made me a believer. Used to be strictly a berger shooter. Check out the vid a few posts below of me shooting at over a mile. Berger couldn't get me there.

I prefer berger personally in my large calibers, and use the ELD-X in my 260 currently. With that being said when I am using bergers I am shooting their hybrid target line or the elite hunters. And yes I do hunt the hybrid targets with no problems.

I shoot the vld 180 gr in my 284 but it is my f class range gun. I use the eldx in the rifles that they make them for. I have had great results with them. Last year I shot 12 does (MLD) at over 400 yards with my Creedmoor and they never took a step.

I've got loads for both 140HVLD bergers and 143 ELDX in my 260ai and can't decide which I'm going with this up coming season. What velocity are you getting out of the ELDX?

Im getting about 2650 out of them but its a low powder charge on a 23" barrel. I hit pressure due to the suppressor. I have great accuracy with them and if I need to shoot further then the 260 will allow at that velocity then Ill just break out the 300 RUM or the 338 Lapua Improved.

I would try them both and see which one your gun likes. They will both get the job done. I run 180vld out of my 7 hunting gun and have killed many elk, deer and countless pigs. That being said, when I heal up from a upcoming visit to the saw bones, I will be trying the 180 eld-m. On my other hunting gun 6.5 saum, I run a 147 eld-m. I let my son pop a 150ish pound pig at 300 the other night and the shot was less than perfect. He still went down like a sack of taters. I tend to be in the camp of wanting my bullet to dump as much energy as possible on game I shoot, and out of all the elk and deer I've shot I've never had one do excessive damage. But I don't shoot them in the middle of the shoulder either.
