I have been looking at a 28 or 30 Nosler build for a while. Don't need one- already have a couple of rifles in each of the 280/7mm and .30 cal ranges-just want one. Just never got off my butt and did it.
Yesterday, however, I got a second Tikka T-3 .300 WSM (guy who owed me some money gave it to me as payment). So I suddenly have a nearly new (less than 100 rounds) Tikka that I can either sell (and use to fund the Nosler build) or use as a donor action.
So, my question is. . . what would you build if you had a spare Tikka .30 cal short action sitting around?

You could change out the bolt stop to allow long action cartridges and do the 28 or 30 Nos.
I'm in the middle of my 30 nos build on a tikka action -- just waiting on my stock and then ill drop off all the parts with my gs to screw together.

A combination of FJG's SAUM recommendations, which got me thinking out of the box, and a bout of GWI (googling while intoxicated) has me seriously considering going full wildcat with this build and putting together a 358/300 wsm aka the 35 sambar. Thoughts?

I like the idea of the 35 Sambar. But then I really like my 32 year old 350 Remington Mag in a M700 classic, never have felt under gunned with that rifle. The 325 WSM would not be a bad choice either

Thoughts? Do you want it to do well at distance, or stay inside 400 yards? Definitely within 400 yds. While the load data, which is admittedly limited, indicates that you could theoretically stretch this round out to 400 or a little more, I just wouldn't. Not to rehash the Chad/NP debate in txtrophy85's elk/black bear thread, unlike my 6.5CM, with a rifle with a recoil in the high 20's, I'm not likely to spend the amount of range time necessary to be able to confidently explore the rifle's outer limits. If I go this route, the intended use would be on CXP2/CXP game in northern Maine/eastern Canada (have a family place in Maine). Moose and black bear mostly with the average shot be in brush and under 100 yards. Lot's of the guys I hunt with use large bore lever guns. However, having heard them complain about missed opportunities on big trophy bulls because it was 200+ yds away across a pond and it was gone before they could get close enough, I'm thinking about a rifle that can accurately chuck a 200-250 grain bullet that far with good terminal performance. As discussed earlier, a few beers and a few hours on google led me to the .35 Sambar. My current thoughts on the build are a relatively lightweight rifle with a relatively short (22") barrel that I can carry around the north woods, but not so light that it beats the c@@p out of me. Still gonna do the 28/30 Nosler build at some point. Though looking at Chad's 7mm/300 build just throws another round into the mix

Looks like you are already doing what I was going to suggest. Which is dig around bit, and what kind of speeds others are getting with your bullet of choice. Apply an average MV, and the BC of the bullet you'll be using, and see what the calculator tells you.

The 350 Remington I mentioned earlier only has a little less capacity than your mentioned wildcat. I run 225gr Nosler Partitions in it started at 2700 fps from a 22 inch barrel. That combination I am comfortable out to 300 yards for elk sized critters and lucky shot killed a coyote at a little over 400 with it. I actually bought that rifle planning on using it for a moose hunt. Largest critter I have taken with it is a nice 5X1 mature bull elk at 200 yards, one shot and few seconds later bull was down. The 350 has a good following in the pacific Northwest for Roosevelt elk in the timber not much different than you Maine Moose
